    sad news...

Noah Wilson, Royals fan with cancer, dies at 7
    Associated Press

OLATHE, Kan. -- A Kansas boy whose fight against cancer and love of the Kansas City Royals received national attention during last year's World Series has died. He was 7.

Noah Wilson of Olathe died Tuesday night at a hospital, his family announced. Noah had his last radiation treatment in mid-June and had been considered free of Ewing's sarcoma, a bone cancer. But his family said they learned in recent days that he had leukemia. He began chemotherapy Monday.

"He is forever wrapped in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. No more pain. No more cancer. Just peace," the family said in a statement.

Noah watched the Royals' run through the 2014 playoffs mostly from his hospital bed. A family friend started a campaign to get Noah to a World Series game and the effort quickly blossomed, with ticket broker StubHub offering tickets, more than $100,000 raised through crowdsourcing and Major League Baseball sending a box full of memorabilia to his home.

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre also invited Noah and his family to be his guests at a World Series game, and they attended the World Series Gala, meeting several players. They also met Torre before Game 2 of the World Series at Kauffman Stadium.

Noah made a special connection with his favorite player, Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer. After word of Noah's death, a tweet was posted to Hosmer's Twitter account.

Wow it absolutely kills me to say this but RIP to my hero Noah Wilson.
    8:27 PM - 30 Jun 2015

The Royals tweeted, "Our hearts are broken. Thoughts and prayers to the family of our bravest little Royals fan."

While hospitalized last year, Noah started a campaign to make colorful Band-Aids available to children at Children's Mercy Hospital. It collected more than $7,000 and thousands of boxes of bandages.

That yung shifting strike zone and the modern player's tendency to hit for power in every at bat (because that's what gets them paid). If you compare the number of strikeouts league wide to the early 90's you would be amazed.

    Orioles To Sign Chris Perez
By Jeff Todd [July 2, 2015 at 2:46pm CDT]

The Orioles have agreed to sign righty Chris Perez, presumably to a minor league deal, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports on Twitter. Of course, Perez was just hit with a 50-game suspension for recreational drug use, so he’ll have to serve out that ban before donning a uniform in the Baltimore system.

Perez, the former Indians closer, started the year with the Brewers organization on a minor league deal after struggling in 2014 with the Dodgers. He opted out earlier in the year and received his suspension while a free agent. Before that, Perez had allowed eight earned runs over 7 2/3 Triple-A frames, with just three strikeouts against four walks.

Still just 29 years of age, Perez has had his moments in the big leagues. Indeed, despite his more recent difficulties keeping runs of the board, he’s pitched to a lifetime 3.51 ERA in 379 1/3 innings (with 8.6 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9). And Perez averaged around 94 mph on his fastball last year, indicating that he could still have some gas in the tank.

Apt description but why now when Beachy is so close. Unless they saw something amongst all the obvious flaws he displayed.

Sources: Cahill to sign Minor League contract
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com — 2 hours ago
    [IMG]
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have signed former Major League starting pitcher Trevor Cahill to a Minor League contract, according to a baseball source. The club has not confirmed.

Cahill, who is 27 years old, was released by the Braves last month after going 0-3 with a 7.52 ERA. A month prior to that he was traded by Arizona on April 2. He is being paid $12 million this year -- $6.5 million by Arizona, and the rest by Atlanta. The Dodgers will be responsible for a pro-ration of the Major League minimum if he makes the Major League roster.

Cahill comes to the Dodgers through the same connection as Brett Anderson and Brandon McCarthy, all three having been in the Oakland A's starting rotation when current Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi was an A's official.

He was a second-round pick in 2006, peaked in his second season as an 18-game winner and All-Star for the A's, but backslid after being traded to the D-Backs at the 2011 Winter Meetings. He was hampered by a hip injury in 2013.

Cahill gives the Dodgers a second-half option for the rotation, which has relied on Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias to fill in, after season-ending operations for McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Also in the mix for second-half starting depth is Brandon Beachy, who is rehabbing from a second Tommy John elbow reconstruction.

Ken Gurnick is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

Obviously a depth move. Maybe they see something they can make changes to?
