I haven't read anything by this guy that I remember but I like his style (disregarding entirely the Dodger ballsack slobbering, of course). He can turn a phrase nicely.

not only can we once again see the light at the end of winter’s long, dark and brutally cold tunnel, but baseball games, broadcasts and box scores are, at long last and in the name of sanity, just around the corner.

Bud Selig and his expanded playoff format have pretty much ensured that, with all the short series standing between the close of the regular season and the final out of the World Series, MLB’s best team each year is more likely not to win.

The Padres, meanwhile, got just about the opposite. And because of that they now find themselves — even as they remain drunk with adulation and absolutely chomping at the bit in anticipation of Opening Day — standing at the starting line with something oddly resembling a piano on their back.

@kengurnick: Expect the Dodgers to sign free-agent reliever Dustin McGowan, who is at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. The club has not confirmed an agreement.

Like this move. Has the ability to make a spot start if needed but has a big arm (avg. 94.0 mph w/FB) and can possibly turn into a quality pen addition

Yep. It's pretty evident what the FO is doing and it's really no wonder the Rays and A's were competitive so long. They make sure there's plenty of depth for every spot but still have quality starters

Introducing another pitcher to the team Dustin McGowan.

Dodgers Expected To Sign Dustin McGowan
By Edward Creech [February 22, 2015 at 2:11pm CST]

The Dodgers are expected to sign right-hander Dustin McGowan, tweets MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick. McGowan is at the Dodgers’ training facility, but the club has not confirmed an agreement.

McGowan, 33 next month, has had a quiet offseason since the Blue Jays declined their $4MM option, but he has been linked to the Orioles recently. McGowan opened 2014 in Toronto’s rotation, but was hit hard and demoted after eight starts. He fared better in the bullpen posting a 3.35 ERA, increasing his strikeout rate to 7.5 K/9, and holding opponents to a sub-.700 OPS in 43 innings.

If the Dodgers do sign McGowan, he will be the third pitcher added this week alone and the fifth this month, per MLBTR’s Transaction Tracker, as the team continues to stockpile depth.

Isn't Brett Tomko still throwing at 90+?

They should look at him too.

Ok, I think we can all agree that our FO had a great off season and primed the pump for our next level goal of the World Series and a championship there. Not sure why so much conversation about the Padres a team that finished third (77 wins) and had a 90 million payroll last year upped a thundering 10 million this year. Why doesn't our front office and their admirers put their big boy pants on and start talking about how they kicked the rear end of the Nationals, Giants, Pirates, CARDINALS cross town rival division winning Angels who I believe won more games than we did last year. Isn't the path to a world series championship road map probably going through those towns and not San Diego? Lets go Dodgers and lets put on our big boy pants and accept that the series opener against the Padres is not our world series. It has more upside for them than us. Now how do we stack up against the Cardinals now that Friedman has done his magic? Is beating the Nats in the playoffs a given now? How about Bochy and those pesky Giants. Can we count on this being per their pattern a non WS championship year?

I believe they also had a better off-season than those teams.

    Good catch....
Someone had to say this...absolutely right.
Not patting the greed enabler Selig on the back for "his innovations" sounds like Shakespeare to me.
His expanded format has taken the long haul, mental/physical toughness aspect completely out of the game, and made it a crap shoot almost.
A clever manager, like Bochy, can exist and flourish within the parameters of this environment, and he certainly has.

Talk about the other big boys, even other large market teams and playoff contenders. Preller for ten million hasn't made the Padres that big picture relevant has he? Sure secondary ticket sales are up 68% for them but this about winning the world series.

or you could email the guy who wrote that article and ask him to talk about those other teams.

i'm sure his piece was just closure to the off-season and aimed at the Padres because they've gotten the most hype. no need to get all riled up about the Padres being targeted..come September, nobody will be talking about them anymore anyway.

Lame signings IMO. Funny, but if. Ned signed theses guys everyone would call it dumpster diving, but now it's smart and for depth. Perspective is everything.
