David Freese has joined in on the option decision extension party. The option is an absolute slam dunk to me, so would guess that we are trying to re-sign him to a multi-year deal. Outside of one season since settling in, Freese has been a pretty consistent 2ish WAR player that mashes lefties and holds his own against RHP. If he puts up say a 1.5 WAR next season, he’s still easily worth the $6M contract. To me, this is the guy that is replacing Utley on the roster. Solid veteran bench presence with a knack for getting the big hit. Curious to see what they give him, but I may punch something if they walk away.

This would also give the team flexibility to move Rios and Beaty, both of whom need to be added to the 40 man and are 1B/3B guys.

 

McCovey was probably more popular with Giant fans. His easy going manner made him a little more likable than the prickly Mays.

 

He may be replacing Utley as a leader in a sense, but he isn't like washed up like Utley unfortunately was. He can still play.

 

Actually, I don't think this is necessarily bad. My guess is an extension for less money per year....maybe with a team option at the tail end.

I'm hoping CK realizes where he is in his career.
