Dave Roberts said Kenley Jansen is the Dodgers closer to start 2021. “I believe we’re at our best when Kenley’s closing for us, but we have a lot of viable options to close games."

kind of what I expected and honestly not like someone was acquired thats miles better. Let the better relievers handle innings 6-8, give Jansen the 9th, but there’s enough in that statement to say that he won’t necessarily be the 9th inning guy every time no matter what

best case scenario really is that Kenley is good enough for the 9th and the better relievers handle the other innings, especially with our offense that should make most 9th innings easier than earlier innings

No surprise there. But hopefully Dave's willingness to pass on Jansen in high leverage situations in last year's postseason will translate to an easier task for him to switch to those other options this year, even before the playoffs if (read: when) Kenley starts shitting the bed.

it seems even similar to how they treat Cody and Kershaw in some ways. Hey Cody, you’re our clean up guy all year we’re gonna give you every shot to be the guy there BUT, come important games, you’re easily sliding to 6th if you’re not consistent. And Kershaw gets the game 1 ball and everything during the regular season, but then treated like a mid rotation guy in the playoffs

Kiley McDaniel said tonight that he has talked to a number of teams that have said now when the Dodgers or Rays come asking about a prospect that they don't think highly of, those teams are stepping back and reassessing the player. One Dodgers source said the club has begun to start calling about random players now to throw teams of their scent.

Just want to point out that at the same number of games played in his career, Yasiel Puig had a higher OPS+, AVG and OBP than Tatis has had with a similar WAR. Not saying that they are the same player, but showing why there is considerable risk to giving a guy a massive contact like this with so few games under his belt, which has also included a major back injury and him tripping up pretty badly after teams fed him a steady diet of breaking pitches. This kid has all the tools to be fantastic, but man you had another year AT LEAST before you needed to do this shit. They better hope things go well for this org, cause if they don't, they are going to have a LOT of money tied up into only a few guys.

Just to add to that. I was curious to see where maybe this money is coming from. The Padres are getting about $50M a year from their TV deal. Just a smidge under $300M less a year than we are for ours. Where the fuck is the money coming from for them to have a payroll around $200M the next 2-3 years? I feel like this is another Preller all in and out. They don’t win this year and I bet we see a bunch of trades sending dudes out a year from now.

Of course Puig was also rewarded with a $40MM+ deal before he had done anything at all. Padres have at least seen TJ do it

TJ's back injury is what it is. If shit hits the fan, Preller knows he'll always have a trade partner in LAD. They won't mind

Every team is run by billionaires who can pay for a super team. It’s just some guys are cheap as fuck and don’t do it to earn more profit. San Diego is the same. It’s just now they actually have a good team after years of being less than mediocre. Gotta go all in when you can.

said i had respect but that doesn't mean its smart
i get the message they're trying to send but laying out 340 for a guy that still has question marks is extremely risky and as you say totally unnecessary right now
2 years in he doesn't have 100 rbi under his belt and no one knows how he'll react to duress or just life
he's instantly a leader and lightning rod for all things Padre
if he and/or Manny pull the club in the wrong direction the implosion has potential to be spectacular

Yeah, the point that it was not necessary right now is what makes it confusing to me. The only feasible explanation is that maybe they felt they were getting a bargain with Covid-era pricing and that next year with teams presumably spending more they'd have to reach deeper into their pockets. Hard to imagine 340M a bargain, but that's the only way I could see them trying to justify it. Still, if it were me, I'd rather have more of a track record before making that type of commitment.

There’s hardly any huge competitions in spring training this year, where I’m guessing the last bench/bullpen spots will go to those without options compared to those that do

I do think Gonsolin/May should start in minors to get built up as starters. Both to work on going a little deeper and increase their 3rd pitches. They’re obviously two of our better relievers but it’s better to have them be starters and use our other arms in the bullpen for a couple months

Final couple of bullpen spots and 2B are all that there is from my view. They’ll go the options route for May and Gonsolin, so the AAA rotation is gonna be fun as hell, especially if Jimmy Nelson starts down there too. Gonsolin doesn’t have anything to prove in AAA, but as much as I love May, he needs some more time down there. He has too good of stuff to allow the high amount of contact that he does. If he can’t figure that shit out, he’s destined for the bullpen.
As for 2B, if Taylor is looking as good as he did last year, it’ll be hard to not give him regular AB’s at 2B. That’s even if Lux looks ready to go again.

So there’s a couple things to watch, but not a whole ton.

so sick of the kenley entitlement
had to have joe kelly — JOE KELLY — save his inept ass in the lds
blew game 4 of the ws
dude is a selfish, pouty bkitch who puts himself ahead of the team
his role should be limited to innings 6-8
i know urias is slated for the rotation, but graterol and victor should at least be given opportunities to close
    fuck kenley

Dodgers have made the Justin Turner deal official. No word on a corresponding move, but a 60 day DL is assumed.

If Lux looks ready to go again - perhaps he will go. To another team.

Proposals for Lux could be intriguing. Never hurt to listen. Taylor's somehow only 30 yrs old, so he may have two or three 3 win years left in him
