My other friend went to Bay of LA thats 12 hours INTO Baja, he said it was relatively safe whatever that means.

It's actually more expensive to leave on a day and a half boat from SD then to drive into Mexico. Costa Rica would be amazing but damned expensive.

yeah CR is great for fishing but the charters start at around 1200 for a decent one on top of 500 airfare and expenses.
if you are traveling w a vet that knows his way i don't think you are going to be in imminent danger so long as you stay safe and don't get so drunk the locals want to smash you on principle.
stay off the beaches at night and keep your wing close. i would go if you have confidence in the guy and he has recent experience in that area.
i've been in Mexico maybe four times in the last two years w no problem but nothing past rosarito.
for all the bad press about the drug situation its only the people involved in the trade or the federalies/policia that are killing each other.
get a good safe hotel and a reliable car and you should be fine imo.
be prepared for a long wait coming back and buy the insurance for the car if you are driving in.

    depends
why a day and a half boat... why not 3/4 or even 1/2 day?
this time of year the fish you'll be going after are there all hours
no sense in being on it at first light
    which brings up another point
summer is the best time to fish baja
the warmer water attracts the exotics -- dorado, yellowtail, tuna, et al
the avg water temp for san felipe in march is 60°F
you'll be going to an unstable foreign land to catch the same fish you'd catch up here
shit, the boats up here have limited out on rockfish the past few days, and yesterday landed a 40LB halibut

Irish, do you have one of those nice Irish fisherman cable knit sweaters like George Clooney wore in The Perfect Storm?

Damn, I knew I found a home here..Die Hard Dodger fans AND Fisherman..I fish Myself. Been doing so my whole life. From Cattle Boats ( not so much anymore) to the Sierras. Mostly Fly fish the Sierras and Surfish for Corbina,Perch and Hali's..The occasional Leo. We should put together a DSP charter out of Peedro or something.

lol, he can keep the sweater... but i'll take his bankroll [IMG]

we've been doing a lot of surf fishing lately
up here in vta county there's a lot of good spots
mostly perch, corbina (usually in the summer) and the very occasional flatty...

although they're more attainable via kayak...

shit, shows you how time flies
was going to say this was only a year or two ago
    then i realized...
my hair's been short for several years

Its safe. walking in is a little bizarre the first time but just go and don't be afraid. a lot of money has been invested in the area.
its still Mexico so don't wear a bunch of flashy jewelry etc. act like you've been there before and don't get shit faced drunk and disrespect the locals.
easy peezy but as crazy as it seems most mexicans i know act like its a war zone and won't go near it.
why you're buddy takes white and asian girls in to the land of the latina is baffling to me.
also find a taco cart on the street surrounded by mexicans and wade in you won't regret it.
live a little wtf is wrong w you?

Even so, it still is pretty cool as a quote to live by.
I do agree, however, if you can't handle a Porsche 550, drive something else. I can't remember, but the whole thing may not have been his fault, sort of like Kinison's fatal crash in Needles.
Y'know, where the other guy just walks away...

This monster is a halibut right?
I never knew how big they grew, until I went to an Indian feast in Alaska. The thing was absolutely huge, and roasted over coals and delicious.

the california halibut get up to 55-60lbs (the one in the pic was 38)
but yeah, the pacific (nee, alaska) ones grow to over 500lbs
    and they're both delicious

which, in an eerie way, is kinda ironic
talk about practicing what you preach
he lived as if he would die that day...
    sadly, he did
or, like the eagles song bearing his name...

"too fast to live, too young to die, bye bye..."

not sure whether the others survived*
but they did turn in front of dean who was purportedly going ridiculously fast
in fact, he had gotten speeding ticket just prior to the accident

*edit: you were right bz, the driver of the other vehicle received only minor injuries
