I work with vets and active military every nearly day. This has come up frequently. I am not arguing if its right or wrong. I am just telling you what they tell me. And this is come up because I have made the mistake of calling someone a veteran. Man they correct you right away. They are proud and their pride is wrapped up in their honor because they are dutiful men. Those type of people would rather take a humble position and give true respect to those who have earned the rank of veteran. We mistake the word veteran now as a word that means someone who has been doing something for a while. Veteran MLB player, veteran electrician, etc.. No. The word has a true meaning. And that meaning is that of a man who has survived combat and is now more esteemed than the rest because of that experience. That experience not simply being time served but AN experience and one that makes you a level above other soldiers who have not experienced warfare. No matter how long they served in the military during peacetime. This is how ancient military operated and how many old fashioned humble soldiers view these things. Because as part of my job I get to listen to older veterans of all branches of the military wax poetic about the good old days.
