Brian Wilson makes Dodgers debut By Ramona Shelburne | ESPNLosAngeles.com Updated: August 22, 2013, 5:42 PM ET Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning in the Dodgers' 6-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday, his first appearance in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2012. The former Giants closer was sharp in his Dodgers debut, striking out two of the three batters he faced, including slugger Giancarlo Stanton. He gave up a double to pinch hitter Greg Dobbs but blew a 94 mph fastball past center fielder Justin Ruggiano to end the game. "It was an arduous process, but I'm glad I went through it so I can appreciate baseball even more," Wilson said after the game. The Dodgers had been looking for the right situation for Wilson to make his debut since calling him up Friday in Philadelphia. With ace Clayton Kershaw shutting down the Marlins for eight innings and a cushy six-run lead heading into the ninth, Thursday was as good of a time as any. "I was really happy for him," Kershaw said. "That's not easy to be gone for almost two years. I'm sure there were some nerves going on for him, but it's cool to see a guy make it all the way back. "He's pretty easy to get to know. He's a good guy. Good clubhouse guy, works hard. He fits right in with this group." Wilson, 31, has 171 career saves but primarily will work in middle relief for the Dodgers. Young closer Kenley Jansen nailed down his 14th consecutive save in Wednesday night's 4-1 win and leads all relievers with 90 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 63 2/3 innings this season. "He's going to be somebody that helps us out," Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said of Wilson. "He's got a great demeanor on the mound. The guy's gotten the last outs in World Series games before, so he's somebody we can count on and know he won't get rattled. He's a great piece to have out there." Wilson said he felt pretty normal Thursday despite the magnitude of the situation. "I only have a brief moment out there, and I can either crumble or rise to the occasion," he said. "So you take a deep breath, and you try to rise to the occasion." Wilson pitched in four minor league games before the Dodgers called him up, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings. "I've been ready for a while," Wilson said. "But if you want to talk about checklists, I guess this would be the final check." __
What did his velocity look like?the article said he hit 94 on the one k but was he consistently hitting 94 or did he have to reach back for something extra on that pitch?I think he could be a HUGE piece for the playoffs if completely healthy.
League, Marmol or Wilson. Fuck one, marry one and have one pitch for you in the playoffs. Wilson looked far sharper in his first appearance than the other two have this year.
sounds legit then.also wouldn't be surprised to see it rise inro the 95-96 range considering he hadn't pitched in a week
And this is why to me getting Wilson is a huge move. With pitchers, you never know when an injury or sudden lack of greatness is going to come. Jansen has been unreal good, and I feel better knowing we have Wilson just in case of tragedy instead the those other two former "closers" to fall back on should something happen to Jansen.
Brian Wilson tells agent that his beard is "going with him to the grave" By David Brown | Big League Stew – 6 hours ago No matter how much someone tries to pay pitcher Brian Wilson to shave his awful beard, he won't do it. One day after a razor blade company offered him $1 million dollars to erase his infamous facial hair, Wilson's agency told TMZ (because, yeah) that he never took the offer earnestly. How close of a shave was it? Wilson's Beard even released a statement: "I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH MONEY'S ON THE TABLE ... NOBODY'S CUTTING ME!" He should let the Beard talk all of the time. And the way Wilson pitched in his return to Major League Baseball on Thursday, changing anything right now would seem a misstep — especially considering ballplayer superstitions. In his first outing since recovering from a second Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery and signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he tossed a scoreless inning against the Miami Marlins. He allowed a double, but also struck out slugger Giancarlo Stanton, acing him on an 88-mph cutter — so to speak — after zipping a 94-mph heater past him. Wilson got the final three outs in a 6-0 Dodgers victory. They're 77-52 this season and rolling. So, no, Wilson can't shave the beard. Not right now. But not ever? Brian refuses to even trim his trademark, and, in fact ... he's told them the beard is "going with him to the grave."Just as we all thought. It's got a death grip on his face. __
Today on twitter he had a scavenger hunt where he gave three clues of stuff around LA and the winner got 4 tickets and a field pass to Sundays game. Pretty cool and fun of him
Sooner or later Wilson's beard is going to be so long that he has to pull it over his shoulder so it doesn't get dirtier from touching the ground.
I saw an interview with him from Dodger Stadium, and he sounded pretty cool. I still think he has a desperate need to be noticed, etc, and to be considered weird is foremost with him, IDK why. But I will like him now. In fact, he is my favorite player on the team now. Brian rocks and to hell with what the Beard (the original LAD Beard 3rd baseman) did in the dugout, with that criss/cross on his chest shit. I think he worships L. Ron Hubbard, right? That's like their sign of the cross, right? I'm all for religious freedom. Or maybe he's a big fan of the X Files. God bless Gillian Anderson. Oh and Scully! Vin. Oh and some other exciting news is that Wilson may dye his beard Dodger Blue!!! Has life turned into a big, warm, pink nippled tit or what?
This dude is a fuckin freak and I love it..His sense of humor is awesome...Hope he sticks with the boys in blue and kicks some Gnat a$$...
