http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer...uspend-dodgers-utley-for-over-the-top-takeout Is heyman a met fan? Wow. You'd think a guy who covers baseball would know more about the game.
This is exactly what I thought when I heard about the suspension. It's 100% PR from public pressure, but like Godell it will just make MLB look dumb. Are we even talking about this if Tejada doesn't get a freak injury on the play? Changing the rules in the middle of a game is what 7-year-olds do, East Coast. Time to grow up.
No way anyone is saying anything about it. MLB network had another segment on this play and they showed three other instances of basically the same play. Gregorious in the wild card game, odor during the regular season and that Matt Holiday slide into Scutaro in the playoffs a few years back. All plays looked similar but the key of it all was tejada was the only one hurt. Holidays slide in that NLCS was way worse than utleys. He slide well after the bag but nothing was made of it after that day. He wasn't fined or suspended or even labeled as anything to this day. It's complete bullshit that this is being played well out of proportion when it has happened on numerous occasions in the history of the sport. Take your medicine and play baseball.
LOL @ Joe Torre on the Utley slide and suspension: "He was just breaking up the double play, but I just thought it was a little bit much." and "I can't worry about what's happened in the past." LOL Joe, looks like you got this thing all wrapped up. This will go over really well in front of a judge
This is just all so wrong from everyone. From Bart Colon's fat ass, to Murphy's bad feed, Tejada's poor mechanics, Utley's bad slide, and Joe Torre's dumbass suspension.
Has this suspension been overturned yet? Personally, I think slides like that are a little dirty. I also wouldn't mind the rule being tweaked or just enforced differently so it's not allowed, and I don't really mind if Utley is off the roster either because he's not a central piece of our team right now. But this suspension is a huge joke considering the volume of similar plays that have received no discipline. If it's upheld it would set a horrible precedent for the power of the MLB front office.
I REALLY mind Utley being off the roster and i think you underestimate the value of the grit he has brought to the team we didn't even steal or take the extra base until he got here and love/hate him the guy has a knack for the clutch hit and has the chip pedigree he may not be a central piece but every player on our squad is well aware of his presence and determination imo he could be THE difference this year
agreed this is something this team has lacked in the past and is sorely needed call the slide whatever you want; dirty, illegal, a tackle... whatever but there's one thing undeniable that no one is talking about... he's gotten inside the met's heads and made them focus on that event and not (necessarily) game 3 itself
It'll be interesting to see how the Mets respond. So far, publicly at least, it looks like this play has rattled them and caused them to lose focus. This play could easily be much huger for us than it ever should have been. I know the plays are a very different, but this felt a lot like Loney's GS vs the Cubs. That one play broke the Cubs. This might do the same to the Mets.
The real culprit here is the fucking Double Play. If it wasn't so devastating to an offense, our sport wouldn't have to take such extreme measures to avoid it.
What I think will happen. Torre and MLB saw all the backlash and felt pressured to do something, so they suspended him, knowing he'll appeal and probably win, and if that is the case, they can just go, "Well, we tried," then totally be done with it.
This reminds me of a Cardinal pitcher breaking Hanley's rib. We never recovered. Of course Hanley was far more important to us at that time than Tejeda is to the Mets.
Definitely. We've been on the receiving end of this more than anyone wants to admit, and if anyone knows how the Mets feel we do. That's why it's hard to feel sorry for them. It sucked, but if you can't move on you don't deserve to be in a WS.
