Let other teams be stupid. That is NOT a fair comparison at all. Those were like 1 year deals or some shit. If CK wants a 1 year $30M I'd do it....and I'd do it the next year and the next.
If Sandy were pitching nowadays then he'd command a huge salary. This in all deference to the fine people on this site is an ABSURD and RIDICULOUS discussion!!!!!! Like I posted earlier, these amounts were reported by Rosenthal?? Since when does anyone listen to him!!!!!!!!!!
lowest era in baseball -- not just the NL -- each of the last three years his current era is lower than anything koufax ever put up in a single season everybody whines about letting pedro, piazza even beltre go this would be way worse imo he's the best pitcher in baseball and he's only 25 $30MM will seem like a bargain 5 years from now we have the money pay him
I actually agree with this.who else would pay ck $30M/year?the yankees are reportedly looking to get under the tax threshold and have cano looking for big money this offseason, the angels are locked into "dead contracts" in pujols and hamilton, the phillies have something like $100M+ locked up to just 5 players over the next 2 years, detroit will have key players becoming FA's in the next few years, and the last time texas signed a player to a huge contract it was a monumental flop.who else would pay that price?boston MAYBE?the best bet in terms of saving money would be the let ck his free agency and let the market set his value
fordie's not denying he's the best pitcher in baseball but so was verlander when his new deal was signed and so was felic when his deal was signed.both are recent extensions too and neither was for $30M+/season..
Another point, 10 years at $30 per puts Kershaw at 33!!!!! He's not Albert who plays everyday and whose contract expires at 43! He's not at his prime yet guys, I'm sorry but this is just madness!!!!!!!!!!
That's a misnomer that's being thrown around too much in this discussion. I'm all for paying him, but he is in his prime. Pitchers in today's league are in their prime when they have their max velocity and have harnessed their command. Kershaw's only going to throw slower, and he's already probably at the height of his command. Not saying he won't be great for years to come, but he's not getting better, sorry, if anything he'll get worse.
verlander's deal pays him $28MM in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and he's arguably not even the best pitcher on his team kershaw has been the best for three years now $2MM more than verlander per year is a no-fucken-brainer to me totally agree with this but i think we'd all have to agree that it's become pretty customary to (have to) pay for a couple of declining years to get the prime years at least for the marquee players
I was listening to Dodger Talk the other day and some guy called in asking if Gonzo can play third base... hahahahaha
We pay Carl Crawford $20MM and Kemp $21MM to play like 80 games a season, pretty sure we can/should/will pony up for CK.
I don't think that was a plan. So you think it's ok to make more bad decisions because you made a few already? Wow, you're headed for disaster in life with that approach.
when verlander signed his deal he was considered the best pitcher in the league.he signed for 7 years 180M or roughly a $25M aav.is kershaw worth $5M more?imo no,especially when u consider the expected players for verlander in FA would have been all the large market teams and as I mentioned before there won't be anywhere near as many suitors for kershaw.imo ck's comparable is felix, similar age and production.will he make more than that?most likely but imo the dodgers should let the market set itself and see if they can save a few mill a year
Idk about fordie but imo a trade isnt an option for me.id let him play out his contract and hit free agency, offer him a deal similar to verlander's or kind felix's and see if any1 will top it.if they do then i'd make your top offer if legit want him back.I also have to believe he'd give the dodgers the chance to top or match any offer
Well I'd try to sign him. I'm just not going to give in to these ridiculous demands. You get length or yearly money, not both and NO opt out clauses.
Clarify. Let's say you follow your strategy and the Yankees offer him 7 years 220. What would you do then?
And what if he says 7 years, 210 million or I'm leaving. Do you let him leave? Do you trade him this offseason or wait the year out and take the pick?
That all depends on if the dodgers think he's worth it.do I think they would?yes.do I think they should?yes.would I?no
Maybe neither.keep him.if the dodgers are out of the race next year(which I don't suspect but you never know)then dangle him as trade bait,if you find a good package with mlb ready talent that's when you make the move.if the dodgers are in the race you hold onto him and make the qualfying offer
I disagree with your logic. If you think Kershaw is worth 30 million a year, sign him to it now. It's extremely uncommon for a superstar level player to go into Free Agency and get less than he'd have taken in an extension. Recent examples being Crawford, Pujols, Fielder, Hamilton, Sabathia, Greinke. The elite talent on the market is always overpaid. So, if you want Kershaw and deem him to be worth 30 million dollars, sign him now. Letting the market dictate his value is a huge mistake if you're already willing to pay him 30 million. Best case is what? Maybe 26-28? Worst case he leaves and you get a first round pick for the best pitcher in the game.
