Let's face it, we overachieved this year. Sure we had the expectations but early on we didn't perform. If you would've told me after the first few months of the season we would lose in game 6 of the NLCS, I would've said you were crazy. This team flamed out for the same reasons we were in dead last early in the season, injuries. The 42-8 run was an example of what we could do if we were fully healthy, then the injuries caught up to us again and we overachieved in the playoffs. We stumbled into the playoffs, hurt, beat up and lucky that we clinched so early. I think we were fortunate to get by Atlanta and injuries caught up to us against the cards. I'm not mad or upset about this, we shouldn't have been this far to begin with.
This team and overachieve do not belong in the same sentence unless it is something like this team didn't overachieve.
We got fucked by injuries. IMO, we were who we thought we were. Awesome team that got screwed at the worst possible time by injuries.
We didn't overachieve. We were much better than the Braves, and the Cardinals were even with us at worst.
We were hurt! Hanley played with a broken rib, Kemp would've caught that ball that cost us game 2. The way I see it considering the bullshit injuries we had all year we did better than we should've. We started skip and nick in center and SS way too many times this year.
The country got what they wanted. The flashy, overpaid primadonnas got beat The same team gets the last laugh every time
I don't know how you could have sat through the games I sat through on a nightly basis in June, July and August and think this part here man I gotta say I agree with absolutely none of that.
We didn't overachieve though. If anything we underachieved by not making it to the World Series. I think we got to where we were supposed to and got screwed.
I think we were the most talented team in the NL. if we had Kemp, a healthy Hanley and Ethier and the rest of the team, then I think we win. We didn't. And we got to the 6th game of the NLCS for the first time since 88'. Fuck overachieving. I'm so happy for this team what we did. Sad as hell. But man, what a turn around from 2011'.
The reality is, this team played good enough during the regular season WITH injuries. Even with a banged up Hanley and Ethier, we had so many opportunities to win this thing. We got 4 great and i mean great starts from Grenk, Kersh and Ryu and only managed to win 2 of those games. Sorry, not gonna get it done. Im not gonna go the injury route but rather the simple choke route. The fact is overall we outhit the cards outside the last game. The problem was our nuts shrank to grapes with the pressure on. I don't even know how many dp's, weak ground outs or short pop ups we had with guys on and with runners in scoring position, but it came to a point where we would all just say, "ok how do we choke away this great situation" To be honest, i simply think the pressure got to this team. Overall it's not like we have had some great experienced players who have played in these types of situations. To me, we seemed tight when those lights shined the brightest. Hopefully this is a great learning experience for them and they realize what we have to do to win a series like this. When the bats aren't working, you find other ways to win and that's what the cards did those first 2 games which pretty much cost us the series. The bright side is if Kemp can return to form, and Puig gets better, we are gonna be scary as hell. Crawford, Puig, A-gon, Hanley, Kemp, I mean................ combine that with kersh and grenk and Ryu, with Jansen as a the closer (hope we can sure up wilson btw) and well we have a team ready to go. A full season ready to play from day 1. We know who we are now and this team tasted a bit of what success brings, but more importantly the bitter taste of defeat. I have no doubt they will be better for it and no doubt we will put it together next year and be even better.
I agree this team cold have been better if not for injuries, but even with injuries we were better than the Braves and as good as the Cardinals. Kershaw, Greinke, Ryu, Wilson, and Jansen were all healthy - giving us a pitching staff as good or better than anyone. Gonzalez, Puig, Crawford and Uribe were healthy too - giving us not a great lineup but one competent enough to compete. Overachieving suggests we got lucky, and I don't recall a ton of luck our way. That's all.
