Not disagreeing with your JD comment they're not winning the West but he does rake lefties so for me it behooves us to get a righty even more or have a righty on our staff step up.

That would seem to point towards the Cubs matching up with Sonny Gray. Since they gutting their farm system just to bandaid this season, at least it would be nice for them to have a couple controlled pitchers for a few years.

Not to mention, I don't remember the last time the Dodgers landed a top pitcher at the deadline. So it would just be fun.

Id love for Gray or Verlander to go to the Cubs. That would open the door for Darvish to come to the Dodgers.

    that's a start
but that still leaves $56MM guaranteed for the next two years
no one should have to give up a lot to get him imo
and personally i'd rather pay the $$$ than have to give up prospects

Basically, if you have to ask then it's not a top pitcher.

Not if it hinders us with free agent signings. Verlander's contract could be the difference between signing a player like Harper or Kershaw, vs being outbid.

    agree on kersh
but the harper stuff is just conjecture
no guarantee he'd come to la, and i'm not sure the nerds would want to spend $400MM to get him
so no need to handcuff yourself in the present for (at best) a 50/50 possibility come 2019
verlander's remaining salary for this year would be around $13.5MM
so unless you're talking about his remaining two more years and $56MM guaranteed it's not that relevant
personally, i'm not on the verlander bandwagon
i think he could be an asset this year, but likely declining the next two
if we have the chance to get darvish, and not get too badly prospect raped, i say do it
and then i would do whatever it took this offseason to re-sign him

I've never understood the love around baseball for every single one of the Cubs' young players. The Cubs got Wade Davis for Jorge fucking Soler. Any casual baseball fan could've told you that he has been a bust before KC even traded for him. The same love extends to Schwarber and Baez. Schwarber can't play a lick of defense, is hitting under .200, and yet you hear so much about the guy. Don't even get me started on Baez.

He's a rental and his K% is down. I get what you're saying but I doubt it's an "immense haul".

I think that might not be an issue. This year was the last year we paid out Crawford and Guerrero for a total of $29.3MM. Then at the end of next year AGon, Kazmir, and McCarthy come off the books to the tune of $51.4MM. I think there is room to accommodate Verlander's $28MM for 2018 and 2019.

    agreed
rangers trying to get something for him rather than just letting him walk
they're gonna ask for a lot, but they don't have a lot of leverage

Another point to consider about Darvish.

"For comparison, Darvish’s current catcher, Jonathan Lucroy, is statistically the worst pitch framer this year with an unimpressive -17.9 RAA. Swapping backstops would do wonders for the four-time All Star’s peripherals, and thus, lead to more success in the stretch run."
