    meh...

Righty Fabio Martinez signed with the Dodgers, per Matt Eddy of Baseball America. The longtime Angel farmhand last worked in the Indians system, but has never managed to harness his live arm and posted BB/9 totals of over ten in 2012-13.

#Dodgers sign hard-throwing RHP Fabio Martinez, whom #Angels signed out of D.R. in 2007 & #Indians claimed on waivers in 2012.

    Matt (KONA)

What's the likely performance level for Joc Pederson? Starter, all-star?

Sounds pretty damn good to me.

Remember when Joc was nothing more than a 4th OF.

    • Righties Juan Gonzalez and Justin Souza have inked minor league pacts with the Dodgers. Gonzalez is a 23-year-old who just transitioned to the bullpen, where he put up a 2.14 ERA -- driven by a large drop in his career walk rates -- in 46 1/3 innings thrown for the Rockies' Double-A affiliate. Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com first reported the Gonzalez signing (via Twitter), nothing that he received a lot of interest. Souza, meanwhile, is a 27-year-old bullpen arm coming off of a 4.58 ERA over 55 innings pitched between the Double-A and Triple-A outposts of the Tigers.

Therron Brockish has more than 20 years of experience as a college coach and as an amateur scout. He served as an assistant coach at Wayne State, Ball State and Arizona Christian and as head coach at Iowa Western CC, and he worked for six years as an area scout with the Philadelphia Phillies, signing big leaguers Jason Donald, Tuffy Gosewisch and Lou Marson during that time. Now he’s sharing his scouting expertise with Baseball America readers throughout the Arizona Fall League schedule.

    Overview:
Watching the Arizona Fall League for several years, sometimes you see players out there who are not quite ready for the speed and/or quality of the competition. I think Seager falls into that category. I’ve seen it in the past with other players as well. Whether it’s clubs rushing guys, trying to challenge them, trying to see how they will handle failure or handle the advanced competition … there always seem to be players in the league who are not ready for it. It can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing for a young player. Let’s take a look at Seager.

    Hitting Ability
    Future Grade: 50
Grading Seager as an average hitter based on the Fall League is still a lot of projection. It’s a small sample to go on (less that 100 at-bats) but it still gives you an idea of where the player is at this point in his development. He’s hit below the “Mendoza line” all Fall (currently at .162). He has struck out 1 of 3 at-bats. I’ve seen a lot of big swings, and very few two-strike adjustments. Pitchers have exposed him hard in and up and with offspeed pitches out of the strike zone. A few times I have seen him look outside and try to go the other way but not nearly enough. Projecting him to hit .270 in the majors is a stretch based on his performance in the league.
    Power
    Future Grade: 60
Seager does show some raw power in batting practice. It’s easy to like a lefthanded bat with some loft and seeing the ball jump off the bat. He’s a strong kid and physically mature for his young age. If it all comes together for him, he could be a 20-plus HR guy in a full season. His swing is certainly geared more toward that than hitting for a high average. He should get his share of doubles as well. He could be a run-producer and a middle-of-the-order type bat if things come together.
    Running Speed
    Future Grade: 40
It’s tough to get a true run grade when you see a guy play 7-10 games and never really see him bust it out of the box to first base. I got a lot of 4.4s (to first base) from the left side, which would make him a 30 runner. I have to believe he’s a step better than that but the concern is the lack of hustle and attention to detail at a young age. Hitting a ground ball to the infield and running to first seemed like a chore. That’s a concern from a 19-year-old.
    Fielding
    Future Grade: 50
His hands are OK, but again, he’s a big guy. He primarily played shortstop this Fall but I can’t see him staying there in the long term. His body (coupled with the lefthanded bat) profile better at third base. I saw Chase Utley play in the Fall League and he worked really hard to turn himself into a slightly above-average defender at second base. I’m not sure I see that with Seager. I think a position change comes sooner than later and you move him to the corner and see how he handles the position. He looks like he has good enough hands and the footwork is more suited to third.
    Arm Strength
    Future Grade: 50
If he has a better-than-an-average arm, I never saw it. I did see him make a few throws from the backhand side at short and he had enough carry, but nothing that would be considered a plus arm. Again, for me he profiles better at third base.
    Overall
Seager struggled in the AFL this year. But he is only 19 and he could come out and be a much better player in spring training and the minor leagues because of it. Aside from struggling at the plate, the concerns I have are the low energy and the “first-gear” play that I saw. He definitely looks the part and has good bloodlines so we’ll see if this experience was an eye-opener for him or if it has some carry-over effect into the 2014 season.

If every scout/scouting org agreed then most would go out of business.

Disagreements are a huge part of the game, but he's knocking Seager in a league where he's facing people 2,3, or 4 years older than him. It's not wise to put a hit tool grade on someone who's clearly overmatched all ready, of course he's going to struggle. To top it off, he questions his fortitude and #want... maybe he's tired? Long season made even longer with this huge assignment placed on him. He struggled the tailend of the season and still shot up the prospect rankings. I'm not worried.

As for Seager, I'll go with the reports from scouts who watched him throughout the season and have said what they are watching now is a clearly warn down and exhausted 19 year old kid. Still very excited for this kid... until we trade him for Price, then who cares.

Heard Bowden talking about a recent conversation he had with Colletti about the pitching down on the farm. Colletti has it Lee, Stripling, Reed and Urias as our top 4. Bowden said he is not as high on Reed and that he believes the team is trying to upgrade, but hoping someone will bite on Reed. He felt Ned was trying to inflate his value on the market so that the team could try and get a better piece for him.

I've never been high on Reed. Thought he was a McCourt era reach.
