It's absolutely astounding how good Scherzer looks against the Mets right now.
The guy is on fire...I'm calling a no no now, in the 5th.

You're absolutely right...they got this guy, who anyone would want, for flotsam. As you wrote, for garbage...and it may be a little more than adding a tighter lock on the WC.
We'll see... A long season, but it's really good to have the best closer in BB.
    Unbelievable.
May it blow up in their faces...

no free agency for Porcello..82.5M extension for him in Boston. good deal for Boston..he's only 26, so they get him through his age 30 season.

Surely we could have given them Ethier/Guerrero/Lee... Although I bet a big part of trading Kimbrel was dumping Upton too

taking BJ Upton was definitely a sticking point..Hart also got a pretty damn good return for a closer ( i don't know why people are talking about " garbage "). granted Kimbrel's the best closer in the game, but most GMs don't value closers that way because they're volatile and health risks. having a great one is a luxury and the Braves don't really need a great one right now because they're not really playoff contenders.

pretty good deal for the Braves..Wisler and Paroubeck are talented..Paroubeck is the talented kid that Barry Bonds has been monitoring. he has loads of potential. and of course Wisler was the top ranked starter on the Pads' farm.

A's had the most confusing off-season. Sell off Samardzija, Donaldson, Moss, and basically every hitter they had but sign Butler and trade for Zobrist/Clippard.

i think Hart's trying to rebuild/add young pieces and establish a new culture at the same time. if Markakis is healthy he's a solid tone setter and a professional. captain material for a young nucleus. they still have a young Freeman and a young Simmons, so they're not completely dead, but they're also not so much of a shoe-in that they need a luxury like Kimbrel if the return is as good as they received from SD.

    you could be right
and at $11MM per, a lot cheaper than extending heyward or upton would have been
it's just that they got older in the process [markakis/31 vs upton/27 and heyward/25] for a team rebuilding
also like that they extended freeman, simmons and teheran

    edit/note:
and he [markakis] is already paying dividends
after speculation that he might begin the season on the dl
he was 1-4 with 2 rbi [including the game winner] and a sb
    so

Justin Upton's been dealt twice now and he's still fairly young and productive..there's a red flag there if you ask me. for some reason multiple execs have passed on making him " the guy ".

Heyward's trade was a shocker because he has the right make up, but Hart did get Shelby Miller in the swap..a potential ace.

31 is just old enough to stick for a 3 or 4 years, be productive, and make an impact on the culture/clubhouse. it helps to have an older dog like Markakis among the young nucleus. he did a lot for that group in Baltimore. drove in 2 runs yesterday to help the Braves knock off the Marlins 2-1 as well. Hart is up to something down there in ATL. they have a new ballpark on the way as well, so they're probably not done. Braves are never down for long.

The Braves brought in John Hart for a reason. He has the experience and credibility with other team's GM's to get the necessary deals done. Atlanta won't be good this year, maybe not even next year. But they're planning for the future and are assembling a team to compete for years down the road. Pretty smart actually.

hey, you know who sucks? Masahiro Tanaka. Lol but no..it was mighty stupid of the Yankees to not push him to get the surgery and just repair the guy's elbow. now they get a middle of the rotation guy for #1/ace money.
