Roberts challenged Liberatore to meet bold claim
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

Shortly after the Los Angeles Dodgers hired Andrew Friedman as president of baseball operations, he completed a trade with his former club. Friedman plucked Adam Liberatore from the Rays’ farm system and veteran reliever Joel Peralta, in exchange for Jose Dominguez and Greg Harris.

Peralta made the Dodgers’ 2015 Opening Day roster, but Liberatore, who tossed 10.1 scoreless innings over 11 appearances, began the year with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Friedman projected Liberatore would quickly join the club, which held true as he was recalled April 18, 2015.

Liberatore remained with the Dodgers through July and returned in September. He was on a similar path this spring after getting sent to Minor League camp on March 28 in the first of several moves to inch closer to setting the Opening Day roster.

That didn’t sit particularly well with the left-handed reliever who had another solid showing during Cactus League play. It prompted Liberatore to make a bold claim which was met by a challenge from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, per Nick Krueger of MLB.com:

Dodgers left-handed reliever Adam Liberatore informed manager Dave Roberts in Spring Training that he’s the best left-handed reliever in the Major Leagues. Roberts told him to “prove it.”

“I like the way people say things and then back them up, and I challenged him and he responded,” Roberts said. “That’s what I like.”

Liberatore was also confident the Dodgers would call him up from the Minors, according to ESPN’s Doug Padilla:

“I told them when I got sent down that they were making a mistake,” Liberatore said. “I just knew I would go down to Triple-A, do my thing,” Liberatore said. “I knew they would want me here.”

By April 14, the left-handed reliever was recalled from Oklahoma City after just four innings over three games. Liberatore threw 10 scoreless innings in 13 relief appearances before allowing two earned runs on May 18.

He responded by throwing 22.1 shutout innings in a stretch that spanned two months. Liberatore set a Dodgers franchise record on July 9 with his 24th consecutive scoreless appearances. He extended it to 28 appearances in a streak that was snapped Sunday night.

On the season the 29 year old owns a minuscule 1.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 43 games, which is already more than the 39 games he appeared in last season as a rookie. Opponents are hitting .174/.260/.252 off Liberatore this season.

    agreed
a brilliant move by friedman in retrospect
viewed by most as a throw in
wound up being easily the best player in that trade

Y'all think a package of Puig, Holmes and a third prospect would get it done for Beltran?

I would disown my kid if they ever interfered with a ball in play. I realize that he's just a kid, but seeing all these morons lean over the railing to grab a fucking baseball is one of my biggest ballpark pet peeves.

That's way too much to give up for Beltran.

Im not a big fan of trading for Beltran because he is 40 and a FA at the end of the year. So, imo that is WAY too much. If MGT went for him I would hope that the top 12 guys (according to the dodger web page) in our minors would be off limits. Id be willing to send Micah Johnson over for Beltran. That is probably too low but again he is not high on my list. Realistically im hoping they would not move anyone named Urias/Deleon/Holmes/Montas/Bellanger/Verdugo for him.

He might go cheaper than that given age.

    Besides:

It's a good thing that Beltran is 40 and a FA after the year. Hit it and quit it.

We won't have to give up anything significant for him.

Chapman fetched quite the haul from Chicago. Yankees asking for the moon for Miller....

Why don't we trade Kenley? Imagine what we could get for him. I love Kenley, but I don't think he's coming back anyways when he hits FA. If you can get a top prospect or two and package them with Julio to Chicago...Sale could be ours. We would still have Verdugo, Calhoun, Belinger, etc.

We would have to find a short term replacement for Kenley which would be really hard but they should think about this.

    Dodgersdigest.com actually suggested this too.

9th innings are tough to watch WITH Kenley. Imagine them without him.

Something tells me if we had an answer for Kenley, we wouldn't have tried to get Chapman in the off season, and anyone in the farm would've been given a try already.

I think it'd be stupid to trade a haul for Archer. Sorry. If we can't buy low on him, then move on.

I hope the front office doesn't think the bullpen is fine as is cause of their recent run. It's not crazy to imagine Blanton/Liberatore crashing down to earth, and getting 1 good arm in the bullpen really is necessary. It wasn't too long ago that every member of the bullpen outside of Jansen gave us a heart attack.

Just can't tell right now which one was the aberration, the early part of the season when the BP couldn't get anything right, or the current one since the All Star break?

That answer may decide our post season.

if we were 15 games out i'd agree
but if we're trying to win you have to hold onto him imo
    despite his shortcomings
the cost of replacing him would be prohibitive
might as well hold onto him... for now
