I'm sure he'd have picked them to win the division 100 straight times

Yeah, the DBacks will need to eat part of that salary in a trade, but they knew that going in. I'd love to have Greinke at a discounted rate.

Especially if they win the WS and Kershaw has a few more amazing starts, gladly take Greinke at 3/80 over Kershaw extended for 5/150+ (on top of the 2/~70).

There are a lot of scenarios where it makes sense to let Kershaw go. But there is a sentimental and PR side to it and I just don't think Kershaw is going anywhere

For those reasons alone, I tend to agree, heck, they might have an agreement in place already.

The Padres are gonna be the next team to win the NL West that isn’t us, I’ve been saying that all year.

Same thing I was thinking. Hosmer will more than likely be long gone

well it has been nice watching the resurgence and apparent dominance of Ryu however...
he's one wrong move from the DL again
i want him back but i wouldn't go as far as to say fuck sack grienke
i'd take him back just for the post game interviews...at least he speaks english lol

That is exactly who I feel would make the strongest run at him. It would have to be someone that could resign him, have the deep farm to make the move, plus a need at the position. Basically leaving the Sox and maybe the Yankees. Devers+ would have to be the starting point.

But what has Greinke done in terms of ERA lately?
Sure he pitches a lot of games... but is he really dominant enough to splurge that kind of money?
We have memories of him being a sub 2 ERA guy but now he is a sub 4 ERA guy.

we also wouldn't be paying all of that kind of money...
he's still a gamer and gives a team a chance to win

Sure, but he's also a mercenary.
    Mercenaries help you win, sure.
He is the opposite of Kershaw.
Bringing in Greinke would be something done if Kershaw opted out.
But then the team would be saying that they would rather pay the mercenary than the soldier.
Plus you gotta pay prospects if you want them to eat some of that contract.
And risk taking a huge hit to team chemistry. He was the reason it was fucked up the last time it was fucked up.
Plus he was a big part of the reason why the team and the media turned on Puig.
Madison Bumfuck has had two seasons in a row cut down in half due to injury and in those bad half seasons, his numbers average to be about on par with Greinke over the same period.
I would rather trade for Bumgarner and give him big money as a FA, pair him with Kershaw, Buehler, Urias, and the survivor from Ryu/Hill/Woods/Strip.

Bum would get injured and never pitch a game for us
I don't know for sure how much he affected team chemistry but iirc we were in the playoffs and i never heard teammates talk bad about him
the Pig was being an immature dick and he got fed up oh well
he's probably a better teammate because of that experience
and what difference does it make if he's a mercenary?
he's under contract for 3 years and he's an elite competitor
i'd take him on my team in a heartbeat

I was going to respond to Rube, but you wrote what I wanted to post about in your response.
Truly, what difference does it make if he is a mercenary?
In the past, I would have a tendency to agree with Rube about paying the soldier.
No doubt. I still have much left of that, praise all dieties.
But the frustration of years of failures absolutely necessitates to go out and get the best money can buy, because the business here is baseball.
And, even though there probably is a measure of fans who value loyalty over cold business, enough is enough. And if the FO making signings just to keep fans, who were never great fans anyway, if you have to "keep" them, isn't something I think they would do.
I've always felt that "my strength is as the strength of ten, because my heart is pure" are some of the greatest words ever written...but it doesn't work in baseball.
    It is what it is.
And when this type of dilemma comes up, and it previously has, I always, inevitably, remember this organization traded Jackie to the fucking Giants.

So fucking stupid that people are making a big deal out of this. The woman did not want to press charges, so the Dodgers did their own investigation. Found enough evidence that they felt he did not deserve to play anymore with the club and was quickly terminated. I am still trying to figure out how the Dodgers were the bad guys here? MLB at the time was suspending dudes like 20 games for that shit if there was a criminal investigation and the Dodgers said, "yeah you done" even without criminal charges being filed. Not positive about this, but if she refuses to file charges and the Dodgers go about smearing his name, said player could probably bring on a hefty lawsuit against the club and MLB.
