If the Dodgers could acquire one player at the deadline, who would you prefer?

  1. Machado

    43.5%
  2. Front line starter (degrom, thor, et al)

    56.5%

Hot take but if we’re not gonna trade Verdugo then consider trading Puig

I like Verdugo better. His swing looks good with his adjusted bat path.

Might make sense to pick up a starter and move Behuler/Urias/Ryu to the bullie. Then run with a starting rotation of Kershaw/Hill/Maeda/Trade/Wood

Roster questions are looming for the Dodgers over the next several days
by Ryan Walton | True Blue LA — 4 hours ago

Barring any setbacks, Justin Turner’s return to the active roster is inevitable in the next week or so when the Dodgers come back home. It would be the first time Manny Machado and a healthy Justin Turner are in the lineup together for the long haul.

That also means that the Dodgers face a roster decision of having to maneuver around the available bench spots, and eventually the end of the six-man rotation. Not to mention, if the club makes a trade for a reliever before Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

Alex Verdugo will be optioned back to Triple-A later today when the Dodgers activate Yasiel Puig, leaving one slot for the combo of Logan Forsythe and Chase Utley upon Turner’s activation.

Yes, Forsythe has been been bad enough to warrant being designated for assignment. The 31-year-old is having the worst year of his eight years in the big leagues, hitting .215/.276/.301 with only two homers and 10 doubles.

Only 10 players in baseball this season with at least 200 plate appearances have a worse OPS than the .577 of Forsythe.

It seems more likely that the Dodgers will put one of Forsythe or Utley on the disabled list if the roster hasn’t worked itself out in the meantime. They only need to find a way around the roster spot for a month until September rolls around anyway.

Utley has been an excellent pinch-hitter this season, going 13-for-28 (.464) with four extra-base hits in the role. Just another reason why taking Forsythe off the roster one way or the other makes the most sense.

As for the pitching situation, the six starters won’t last much longer and will force a move for one to go to the bullpen. That’s also a way around the question of Forsythe and Utley. Either Pedro Baez or JT Chargois could be optioned to have one of Ross Stripling, Kenta Maeda and Walker Buehler slot into a relief role.

Buehler could also pitch his way into being optioned as well.

If the Dodgers decided to go with 12 pitchers for a while, it delays any decision on Forsythe who would easily pass through waivers should the Dodgers find a way to move him.

Which brings us to the approaching trade deadline. It seems like the Dodgers have been mentioned in Chris Archer trade rumors since Andrew Friedman took the reins before the 2015 season.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal mentioned the Dodgers as one of the team’s involved in a trade talks for the right-hander Saturday morning. It’s simply a rumor at this point but Archer will make less than $2.5 million for the rest of the season and is under team control through 2021.

Archer won’t be cheap to trade for, especially if Forsythe’s money was part of the package. It’s also hard to believe that the Dodgers won’t add another bullpen arm by the time Tuesday rolls around.

Whatever happens in the next few days, expect the roster to look a little different by the end of next week.

If we gonna empty some prospect stash for an expensive player from the Nats why not go for Max Scherzer instead?
They will try to trade him and not demand as high a prospect count as he would normally be worth. Not just because of age but because his contract contains balloon payments for the last 3 years remaining of his contract that raise his salary to 37M per year. Plus a no trade clause.
Sherzer would really put this team as the favorite to win it all.
Kershaw, Sherzer are two almost sure wins. Then you need a combo of Meada/Stripling/Hill/Buehler/Wood/Ryu to get you the other 2. That's some real good odds that your team will win 4 games in a series first.
It would almost be like a gift to Kershaw while he is entering the adjustment period of his his prime years where he has to grow and become a more savvy pitcher to keep himself healthy. Giving him another superstar pitcher to ensure that the Dodgers are a championship contender for the foreseeable future is something that Kershaw will surely appreciate. Getting Herrera from them too would be huge.
The Dodgers could then go to an 8 starter rotation using Max and Kershaw as aces who go most of the game and Ryu/Maeda/Wood as a three headed monster that starts game 3 with Hill/Strip/Buehler as the three header starter of game 4.

SP1: Kershaw. Both should also pitch games 5 and 6.
SP2: Scherzer. Both should be able to go 7th or 8th the first two games.
SP3: Ryu starts game 3 with Maeda and Wood as relief keeping players fresh and effective.
SP4: Hill starts game 4 with Stripling and Buehler as relief in case they need to take over.
    SU: Herrera, Alexander, Urias.
    CL: Kenley

    3B: Turner
    SS: Machado
    LF: Kemp
    1B: Muncy
    CF: Joc/Bellinger
    C : Grandal/Smith
    RF: Puig/Kike
    2B: Utley/Taylor

This would also allow the Dodgers to field a competitive enough lineup in the world series with Bellinger or Muncy making pretty good DH candidates to extend the lineup.

Currently watching Barraclough blow a save against the Nats... Relief options have been really shitty this past week. Honestly beginning to think maybe thats why they’re targeting a starter: Maybe it’s better to push a current starter to the bullpen than it is to just target a reliever who looks shitty right now (or, could always get a starter and buy low on a reliever)

Not a bad plan since Maeda has proven to be a good relief option, as well as a few other SPs.

But, SP that is available and won't blow our $197M without having to throw a lot of prospects and players with salary to throw the other way is also pretty thin, right?

The Dodgers said to being seriously pursuing Archer is....odd.... He’s probably our game 3 starter as things currently stand, maybe even game 4. I wonder if the shitty reliever market has the FO envisioning a Kershaw, Maeda, Hill, Archer and Ryu rotation, with a goal that two or more of Wood, Buehler, Stripling, Urias and/or Santana can see their stuff take a leap forward in a pen role. This is going to be an intriguing couple of days.
For your info, Dodgers starting pitchers under contract for 2019:
Kershaw(likely), Hill, Wood, Maeda, Buehler, Stripling, Urias, Santana, Ferguson and Stewart. Archer would be a nice addition to that. We’d be looking at another crowded pool of starters, but plenty of guys with options and Archer adds some stability after Wood and Hill leave before 2020.

Potential upside addition. Doesn't hurt to add a guy that could potentially pick the club up after Kershaw let's the club down. Archer's needed a fresh start for like 3 years now. Said yesterday or the day before, but it's just time for the Rays to unhand that guy. He's wasting away there. All the optimism they begin these seasons with in Tampa are fool's good, especially in that division. Rays are done for a while. Archer himself tried to play into the optimism before the season.." we've got 8 or 9 great starters " Lol No, ya don't.

They should send us Wil Ramos too so we can lose Barnes.

Dodgers missed a huge opportunity here. We could have used a Bellinger replacement
