I'll let BG answer but "if" the lease was reassigned in BG's name and legit then the $50 deal would never have happened.

Mousey's take was more akin to my prior advice.

The fallacy of course is that 'some' people do not shirk their civic responsibilities.

My 2nd time serving jury duty was as a juror in the famous John Holmes Laurel Canyon Slayings trial. Calling it an eye opening first hand view of our justice system is wholly inadequate. I watched the press every day fuck up because they were in court for the AM sessions but always packed up and left before the afternoon sessions. Thus every night, watching news I was forbidden to watch, I learned how messed up our 'free press' is when playing their own angles instead of reporting straight facts.

The court system may be fucked up but it's better than any other system to date.

Yeah, I guess it's better than getting your hand lopped off for stealing a pomgrenate.

i avoid court at all costs
primarily because the cost of going through it mentally and financially
i have won and i have lost and its never been worth it
judges in small claims listen and look at pictures and typically find about half and half so even if you win you lose no matter what
and then you have to rely on the other guy actually doing the right thing
have watched a lot of people waste a lot of their lives and come up empty for a lot more
    $600 is a cheap lesson

minimum wage is a joke imo
or at least how it's broadly applied
should be a much lower minimum for grunt work
now way a fast food fuck should be eligible for the same wage as someone doing more intensive/intellectual work
    $15/hr to flip fucken burgers?
    fuck that

I appreciate the time and replies from all of you guys @Shaw @LAdiablo @BlueMouse @CapnTreee @irish

Just more details on the situation

I had no prior connection with the person I assumed the lease from, thankfully lol. It was just a random student who had a private matter come up and they could no longer live at the apartment. However the school charges you $400 for any early termination of your lease
I was already planning to live in this housing complex, at the same $1000 rate with the same floorplan, but figured I might as well negotiate some and if i get any type of discount, it works for me.
Since I knew the person was fucked out of $400 regardless (however, they dont get charged if they can transfer their lease--which we did) I asked if they would do $950 and they agreed (basically just give me $50 a month and ill take over the lease). They paid me the first payment immediately. But then stopped when i assume they figured $50 x 12 is $200 more than the $400 they would have lost lmao. Or they knew they could give me $50 and then duck me forever. Idk
But either way the lease went to my name and they were off the hook

From what everyone has replied, it does look like im fucked haha. At this point there is only a moral contract as opposed to a legal one.
I didnt really lose anything since I was going to pay the $1000 regardless, if anything i made the $50, but im just pissed that we agreed and the person is breaking their promise.

So without any legal standing ill take BM and Diablos advice and try the fear tactic.
In month 2 or 3 I used some sort of emotional appeal to get something but iirc the person didnt even reply

Im not on Irishs level but I can photoshop a pretty good legal document lmao. Throw in some words that shaw mentioned and im pretty sure it is a good enough attempt to get something

At the end of the day you guys are right that its a cheap lesson. im just mad af that some people have no integrity
Which makes me wanna go wit capn's idea and hit up DSPs own vito and guido in lynchgagne

Thanks again though. Yall the goat. Kinda like father figures but not. Prob like some cool uncles tbh

I know how annoying it must be having outsiders trying to tell you your shit, and I apologize, but that minimum wage is fucking disgusting. Appalling. You are the richest country on Earth, what the actual fuck?

It's also surprising to see some of the comments. It is quite common on here to see something like "good luck flipping burgers" when a guys arm blows out. And what exactly is wrong with flipping burgers? You guys are fat ass fuck nationally, you have no problem eating them. The guy flipping burgers, the girl taking your order, the guy mowing your lawn all have lives, families, mortgages, bills. Nobody working a 40+ hour week should be scraping the barrel like that. That's messed up, it really is. Good on them for getting off their arse and doing essential jobs nobody else wants to do. You can do any of those jobs here, and EARN a comfortable middle class living. My neighbour has worked in a grocery store since he left school. Mortgage free at 40 in a nice neighbourhood. Fucking eh. Works hard and shit hours, good for him.

Here, us commies hate on people on welfare who can work and don't. Anyone working in whatever job is an equal in my books. I play golf every weekend with a drain layer, roofer, crane driver and my dentist. There ain't no class gap.

In saying that, I don't get the whole tipping system. Maybe is evens it out. But fuck, that figure is ugly. No wonder there's such a gap between rich and poor.

It's difficult to say precisely why America has become what it has...everyone has their own opinion and dissertation as to why. As you can read it in microcosm even on here, a bb site.
The class gap has been growing for years, and is at a runaway rate presently. The culture of being on the dole has proliferated for a long time, and is a job skill to many, and it has been allowed to grow to alarming proportions. And what is coming will only increase and ensure it's continuation.
Considering the present conditions, the minimumm wage increase will initially help those who flip burgers and mow lawns, and good for them. Everyone deserves the best for their families. No matter what they do.
But New Zealand, I guess because of it's location, and maybe policies, etc., does not have borders where immigrants stream over the border by the hundreds every day, and are basically taken care of to some degree the moment they arrive. The problems, and the basic mind set, sadly, are very different between our two countries. Although a dreamy wish for some throughout their life (mine anyway), people don't, when they are looking for an immediate shot at a better life, say " let's go to the south Pacific and start over in NZ". Most, anyway.
Here, as the debt grows and grows as never before, people feel they have to keep and protect what they have, because the possibility of others "to take it from them" is much more likely and real than ever before. Whether it is real or not, that is the underlying perception, imo. The core problem.
It's not annoying, to me anyway, to read what a citizen from another country feels about the US. And to think that the global "ugly American" is a myth, perpertrated only by media, is naivete at it's worst by Americans.
But the idea, in this unspoken "self preservation" climate of desperation as never seen before, of giving $15 to burger flippers, when many barely made that themselves after years, ( at whatever they did) just gets people very pissed off. Some don't even know why...the multifaceted, complex problems have not been handled competently by those in power for years and years, and have now reached unsolvable proportions, imo.
It's gone over, here, so enjoy the friends and classless society you have while it exists at home, lest it dries up like ours has. I envy you...I have tried to live my life that way. Hopefully it never does end for you.
    For us, it's unfixable.

BZ, excellent post.. so many truths included but I'd choose to rebut your final assertion.. it's just that the 'fix' is almost as untenable as the cause.

Perhaps later, if I get sufficiently liquored up, I'll compose something less than a dissertation to explain the overlap in our assessments. As an inventor and small business owner I am 100% a fan of capitalism.. but as the Martin Shkreli example indicates, among others, there apparently needs to be 'some' limits to completely unfettered capitalism when said capitalism results in the cost of lives or the ruining of the society upon which it feeds.

Kind of like ALL unions are a cancer that kill the host of EVERY organization where they take root

    no offense intended nz
but i think you miss a lot by not living here/seeing it in person
not talking about someone working hard trying to support a household
in fact, those are the people i'm lobbying for
i'm talking about the spoiled, entitled little fuckers who want everything handed to them
not sure you have many of their type in nz, but there's a shit ton of them here
walk into any fast food joint, convenience store, juice bar, coffee house here and you'd see them
nothing wrong with flipping burgers or anything else for a living
but there's everything wrong with taking no pride in your job, not helping customers, fucking around, and acting as if the world owes you a living
a $15 minimum wage for a full-time fast food employee would be $31,200
and yet the average wage of a sergeant in military with 2 years experience is $25,913
so there is a problem when the guy/girl fighting for your freedom gets less than the ones benefiting from it

Yeah good point Irish...especially since talking to the VA rep today about my dog becoming a therapy pet...I may do it. Somebody has got to try and help these poor people.
They should get minimum wage ( at $15) at least for taking a hit from Haji's AK47. A hit that will, almost assuredly, change their lives forever.
    Damn right they should.
Didn't mean to go off point...but one thing leads to another.
