joe peaked in A ball and has a trophy case full of zero WS championships.

Mattingly has experience with expectations as both a player in NY and as manager of the west coast yankees
No one ever expected a thing from the rays or came to the stadium even during their playoff runs

Mattingly has been around huge egos and contracts as both a player and manager
A ball players have roomates and I assume so do many of the Rays

Mattingly has little beyond 3 starters and a closer to fill 162 games with
Joe had a seemingly endless supply of arms coming from the farm from years of top 5 picks. Until recently when the rays started winning and picking at the back of the pack.
Last year, Joe managed them to 77 wins

I get people just want mattingly fired because 240 million dollars underachieved
I think Maddon is a great manager
I don't think mattingly held back the dodgers from anything better than they were
I don't think maddon is the savior for LA

The roster has too many holes, underachievers and heartless check cashers
Since they are run by an investment group and not a win at all costs billionaire they have probably hit their financial ceiling and won't just cut guys and replace with better players

expect the same results next year no matter who manages them as you likely have the same team

i stopped reading after the bold. appreciate the effort, but Maddon is one of the very best managers in the game and a clear upgrade. bottom line.

Maddon is an upgrade, but Youk is right. We didn't lose because of Mattingly. We lost because of lack of execution, a terrible bullpen, and Clayton not being able to hold down a lead.

Maddon is an upgrade, but you still need to fix the holes on this team. I'd rather do that first than wait out and hope Maddon wants to come to LA.

and what i don't understand is why people need to blame Mattingly for the loss in order to upgrade at manager. you upgrade at manager because you should.

there's nothing to wait for and there's no by the book approach. if an upgrade becomes available, you throw your hat in the ring for him. there's no rule that says you have to address weaknesses in a certain order. Dodgers are the new money in MLB..agents don't move without talking to them and every agent wants them in on their guy.

This is funny. SF wins because of Bochy, right? He sets the tone and uses the players as a team and is not afraid to sit guys that don't buy in to his concept. I'll say it again, what's DBB's concept???

DBB is OK as a manager, but we need better.

    agreed
and if we're going to fly the we didn't lose because of mattingly rhetoric
then we also have to admit we don't win because of him either

How the hell did Mattingly not cost us the Division Series? He left an obviously gassed Kershaw in game 4, he never once used Dan Haren out of the pen, in Game 2 he took out Hanley for defense in the 8th when he was due up 2nd in the bottom of the 8th. He pulls that defensive replacement shit all the time, and surprise we were 6-12 in extra innings last year -- no shit, when you take your best players off the field. And one of our best hitters, Puig, was completely neutralized when the opponent had a game plan for pitching to him.

I call bullshit on this idea that Mattingly is anything other than a below-average manager.

Sorry, but you're going to have to explain to me how that particular part was Donnie's fault.

Puig looked clueless in a lot of his ABs, or he was swinging for the fences with the tying run in scoring position. IMO, Donny and his staff did not have Puig ready for postseason play and a smart pitching staff.

i hate molina and how he baited puig and got him out of his game, but you have to admit it was genius

Dude. Molina didn't set out to bait anyone. Shit happens during the course of a baseball game. It's not like he was in his hotel room the night before stoking his chin saying...hmmmm how can I Fuck with puig...shit happened and puig got caught up and sucked. No excuses or explanations for his getting mind fucked..he mind fucked himself from a basic baseball situation...he's just an idiot..and frankly...so is molina.

you can't tell me you were begging for Dan fucking Haren to get in the game... out of the pen... no way

we've been taking Hanley out for defense late all year, if he made a crucial error you would have been pissed and cussed out Donnie too, hindsight is 20/20

and how the shit is it Don's fault that Puig wasn't great? lol in fact I only blame him for taking Puig out in game 4, now that was dumb.

never said he set out do do it
    never said it was premeditated
only said he baited him, which he did, and that it was smart and effective

yea, i don't think it was genius on Yadi's part either..Yadi just has an edge and feels like he has the stripes to talk shit to whomever he wants. it's not the 1st time he's gotten into it with guys at the plate, so it's not like he was just picking on Puig

Dan Haren in September had a 2.70 ERA, 27 strikeouts to 3 walks, and a 0.73 WHIP. The moment we decided to go with a 3-man rotation Haren should have became a bullpen option and as far as I can tell he wasn't, and our manager played scared to go to the bullpen.

And that has been the wrong move all year. If Hanley is so bad at defense that a defensive replacement is necessary, then he shouldn't play on the field at all. It's not hindsight, Hanley missed numerous ABs in games that went into extra innings this season. He was due up second when he was taken out in game 2.

I dunno, but the giants' players seem to be ready to go in the postseason. Is it too much to expect a coach to coach?

I'm not saying Mattingly is 100% responsible for us losing the NLDS. But to shrug it off and say "he got the best he could out of this team", I don't buy that. And that's the attitude in this thread that I was responding to. Can we improve at manager? From what I've seen we absolutely can.
