    Just last week...

    ‏@DodgerInsider
Kershaw threw a bullpen session Wednesday "upwards of 60 pitches," Dave Roberts just said. "We're just really encouraged."

It doesn't un-herniate for sure, but sometimes the swelling does reduce in some patients. Also if it's causeing sciatica, PT can loosen up the nerve paths a bit to reduce the pain.

In my case, I knew I tweaked my back bad lifting up some heavy bundles. I could barely walk for two days, and then I became functional albeit with soreness.

Then I noticed some really bad left leg pain. Nasty sciatica to the left started happening. Tried to ignore it, but then noticed my left leg was substantially weaker than my right....more than what you would expect from being right handed.

MRI showed the herniation in the lumbar.

2 years I tried to rehab. Took a bunch of epidurals, fistful of anti-inflammatories (including Vioxx that probably reduced my life span), and then finally gave up the ghost and got surgery.

No sciatica so I don't regret the decision, but they usually cut vertically across the back muscle, so when stitching that back together, it's never the same.

Oh yeah, intense body peircing, up and down the spine pain and back spasms for days. Upside? A big dose of Vicodin.....never felt more peaceful in my life when I was on the stuff.

IF Kershaw gets surgery, he's strong with the best people that money can buy to bring him back, but I'm just afraid it will be 90% of him...which probably still makes him a #1 SP. But afraid of what could have been.

This is going to be a lesson for Roberts to not say anything about shit he knows nothing about. The surgery thing was his own personal opinion, though his nickname is Doc, he should not have said what he did today. The game of telephone already reached MLB radio on my way home as I was really sad at first to hear about the passing of Clayton Kershaw, but naturally it was just overblown. Multiple people higher up, including an actual spine Dr, have said that surgery should not be necessary at this time as the nerves are not being affected. Everyone take a step back from the ledge, this setback sucks, but let's wait for a little more info before we hang ourselves.

On the other hand, if this was the FO trying to discreetly get teams to start calling on players the Dodgers wouldn't want to actively be shopping so they can pull off some wild other trades, then well done!

What Roberts has to say on the state of Kershaw's back means nothing.

Yeah, the way I looked at it was that if the pain didn't improve then the surgery route becomes more of an option than it was before. File that under the "duh" category.

If this was any other business...maybe, other than it would break every HIPPA rule in the book.

But he's your most valuable and highest paid player, and a potential all time great. Needing surgery is a MEDICAL diagnosis for which Roberts is not qualified and may not have been authorized to say.

Either the player himself says it, or the team doctor. Everyone else better have had their ducks in a row before saying something. Something tells me Roberts had shite when he said it.

That was just abad move on his part.

He didn't diagnose anything. He said it was a "possibility" if the pain doesn't subside. Media ran with it.

That is the definition of a medical prognosis based on a diagnosis of disc hernia.

How if he just did this:

Question: "Kershaw had a bit of a setback?"

Answer: "Yeah. He complained about some back discomfort. We'll check with the team physician and keep tabs on it going forward. Next question."

Because that's not how it works haha.

I guess some people could consider it a medical prognosis, but it was more common sense to me. He had a setback, if the pain doesn't go away then surgery could be an option. I don't think it takes a genius to figure that out.

Really, and by what training and medical logic would you have to determine when any ailment may require "surgery?"

His head hurts...it keeps hurting. If it continues, he may need surgery.

He has a side ache. It keeps hurting. If it continues, he might need surgery.

He had a MRI. It shows a herniation in his back. If it keeps hurting, it may need surgery.

Don't think for a second that the remedy of surgery is something a non-doctor....and someone who is not even the patient has a right to say.

Bitch acting like it's the 7th inning of a playoff game. Harden up and walk that shit off girly-boy. We got a division to win. It's only your spine, not essential at all.

I really don't think it's as big of a deal as you're making it out to be.

NOBODY said it might REQUIRE surgery. He said 'surgery MAY BE a posibility.' There is a big difference between the two.
