i love magic and maybe its just me... but does anyone else feel uncomfortable with him seeking/getting backers at the last minute? i don't know a whole lot about cohen (other than forbes rates his net worth at >$8 billion) but cash in hand goes a long way... http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/03/nl-west-notes-dodgers-ownership-moorad-dbacks.html
I think it's perfect. Magic's bid is more but the upfront money is less obviously. he grabs this guy to up the upfront money. smart business decision imo
Why? He is without a doubt worse than Magic, significantly worse. I don't know why people think cause he is throwing out more money that that makes him smarter and better. There's soooo many things wrong wih Cohen
He's a self made billionaire, he's an extremely serious and savvy businessman. Exactly the type of guy you want running a franchise. Magic's a clown.
I don't care if he made 800 billion dollars off creating the smartest mathematical formula made to man kind. He's going to hire Tony Larussa: That's as far unsavvy as you can get in baseball. Unless you're cool with Ned type moves in the future, than yeah, Cohen is bomb.
I am not sure where this is coming from. I do not like LaRussa but he likes winning. I am not sure Ned does. I think I would be good with either. I, of course, would prefer Magic's group but I am wondering if they will pony up for payroll once they are paying the bills. Cohen may be the same. At one time people were assuming McCourt could be a savior. Instead he tried to destroy a franchise.
He wouldn't be GM, he'd be President. I fail to see how involving one of the best managers ever in the franchise is a bad thing. Also, there have been whispers about a Dodgers network ala YES. Cohen is the only one with a realistic shot of making that happen.
this is my concern getting a lot of backers to buy the team is a lot different than spending to improve it
Surprised nobody posted this: http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/n...0316&content_id=27325998&vkey=news_la&c_id=la With respect to Cohen I don't know if I am comfortable with the words hedge fund that keep coming up in describing him.
I am with you on Magic and I haven't heard anything bad about how he runs his businesses. Magic's group also had a very very well respect baseball man in his group and that is Stan Kasten. The only reason he (McCourt) was considered even remotely as a savior was because of what Fox did to this franchise.
exactly and then when they collectively realize they've purchased a potential anchor who ponies up? do they all continue to have personal success? what if they litigate each other what happens to the dodgers? nothing good as we just witnessed i hate partners even though sometimes there is no choice it rarely ends well
I agree with you, and yes La Russa likes winning as much as anyone and I truly think he has a great sense of character. But he is about as old school as it gets. Yeah, he won't be our GM but a President of Baseball Operations, what would his first move be? Hiring a GM. And do you think a guy with La Russas mindset is gonna hire someone like Epstein, Freidman, Cherington, etc. or someone like Ned and Sabean? With that said, I'm dearly hoping if Cohen wins he proves me wrong. I hope he hires some smart people and uses money to make the Dodgers better, and not just PR moves. I truly hope it. Magic might be worst than Cohen, who knows. I just don't like the sentiment that Cohen is far and away the best choice just cause of cash.
Where do you get this from? Magic has done nothing but build a few failing movie theaters and run Fat Burger into the ground. I have yet to see anything magic touches sustain. That is without a doubt something we dont want to see happen to the Dodgers. Hmmm kinda sounds like McCourts view of business. Build it up, suck out the dough, and leave whats left to whoever wants it.....
I think people are diminishing Magic's post-NBA career a little bit, but so is your right. You could say "has done nothing..." for guys like Jordan, who other than his Nike sponsored line and terrible career in the front office, still has had the most success directly from his NBA career. Magic has started his own business which is worth close to a billion dollars along with being a huge philanthropist, especially involving AIDS/HIV. I get we are talking about opinions, but I'm sure some people think of Jerry West as just the man in the NBA logo or GM based upon their lack of knowledge that he's one of the 20 greatest NBA players of all time. It's all about perspective, but in LA the view of Magic isn't even comparable to guys like Kareem, Koufax and Gretzky, who are huge, mega stars but they are restricted to sports stars. Magic is a transcendent personality-- more than an athlete, he's a national icon. Magic would be a great promoter for the team (I just don't know that many people are going to come see the team because of the owner.) At the least he'd give people "good vibes" about the team again after an era in which the team has had just about every negative news story you could imagine.
