Kemp was never as good as Trout and unlike Kemp, Trout has done it for more than one season.

Kemp, even in his best season, was never as good as Trout.

The Los Angeles Angels recently scouted Masahiro Tanaka and are considering a pursuit of the undefeated Japanese pitcher this offseason, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Angels had a scout in Japan last week to watch Tanaka, who could cost them a posting fee of $25 million, according to the paper. Tanaka set a Japanese professional baseball record for consecutive victories in a season by winning his 21st straight decision last Friday.

Angels starting pitchers entered Tuesday with a 4.37 ERA, the eighth-worst mark in the majors. Los Angeles starters Jason Vargas, Jerome Williams and Tommy Hanson all are scheduled to be free agents this offseason.

Tanaka improved to 21-0 after giving up two runs in pitching a complete game in the Rakuten Eagles' 6-2 win over the Orix Buffaloes. The previous record of 20 was set in 1957 by Kazuhisa Inao. The last time Tanaka took a loss was Aug. 19, 2012. Since then, the right-hander has won 25 straight, one more than the Major League Baseball mark set by Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants in 1936-37.

Many in Japan are suggesting that Tanaka, 24, will pursue an MLB career after this season, a move that would make him the most sought-after Japanese export since Yu Darvish.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

It's not even close. Kemp's offensive numbers were worse and Trout is head and shoulders better defensively. The numbers Trout's put up the past two years are some of the best in baseball history, while Kemp was MVP level, but not historic.

If he maintains this pace (big if) he'll be a Hall of Famer by the time he's 27.

Puts up a .963 OPS last year, with 49 steals and only 5 CS, along with elite defense... in 139 games

Then this year, a 1.000 OPS Geez

A career .952 OPS at the age of 21, my goodness.

It's not an insult to say Kemp wasn't Trout good. Thats like other teams being insulted if their good pitchers aren't as good as Clayton Kershaw, it's more about Trout putting up borderline untouchable years from both sides of the plate.

Huge hypothetical: lets say next year Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols have another declining year. What do you think would happen if the Angels said: We'll give you Mike Trout, if you take all of Hamilton and Pujols, but also give us good specs.

How good would those prospects be, and does anyone do it?

I think any team would do it.

I go for it again with what they have next year and if that doesn't work I'd try to move Hamilton and eat money. I think if Hamilton has a little value at, say, 3/39, so if you eat half you can move him. Pujols isn't going anywhere. And the key will be pitching.

Really, to say it's not even close?...this is total bullshit(with all do respect).
2011 Kemp matches up to either of Trout's 2 years pretty close. You're just splitting hairs and showing preference to some stats over others. It's obvious you do not think highly of Kemp, and ignore stats like RBI and HRs. so maybe in your baseball world they're not even close...LOL whatever. Agree to disagree.

Last time I checked a 39HR/ 40SB/ 126RBI season is probably a historical season, but growing up in the the steroid era I can see why that would make you yawn....but maybe you ignore that too.
Consider how many players have pulled off the 40/40 season and then check how many of them were proven PED users= Canseco, ARod, Bonds, Soriano- 3 of these guys are proven and Soriano certainly fits the bill.(I'd look up 39/40 seasons but I think the point was made and I don't want to waste more time finding that weird shit)
Even Trout may never do it and he's obviously the best player in baseball right now....he's certainly not even close to a 40/40 season.

And all these bullshit fielding stats saying Kemp is so horrible in OFer are so laughable to me. Kemp is no a horrible OFer. He makes plenty of great plays and has a very strong arm with speed. He's not Billy Ashley, Manny Ramirez or Scott Van Slyke...that's horrible and that's why those guys would never even get to play CF. I'm not saying he's great or deserved his GoldGlove, but he's not terrible. I've seen plenty of terrible OFers, stats or no stats...he's not terrible.

How is that obvious? Because I was against his huge contract that he hasn't come close to earning? Because I called his down year and was right? Those are probably the only anti-Kemp things I've ever said.

And yeah, I don't value HR's and RBI's at all when comparing players, so we'll agree to disagree there. But to me, and anyone who understands and accepts advanced metrics, it's not close. Trout's had two 10 win seasons in a row. In my lifetime that's been by only one other guy, who was pretty damn good himself.

That'd be Barry Bonds for those who don't want to look it up.

Mike Trout is much better than Kemp, of course Mike Trout is much better than 99.99999999999999999999999999999999% of every baseball player. Mike Trout is 100% better than anybody.

I would have referred to him as the greatest of all time, but I didn't want to get into a steroids talk.

the AL Wild Card race is wild and I love it. I hope the season ends with like a 4 way tie for the wild cards.

Did you predict Kemp being injured? Because that's more than likely the only reason he hasn't lived up to his contract at this point. He was sure on his way to repeat 2011 until the COL wall crash.
WAR?...maybe the only "stat" that carries no weight with me. Advanced metrics are not the be all end all yet that's all you preach. I can accept them fine for the most part but that doesn't mean you ignore everything else.

Comparing baseball players is full of grey area. It's not like the 50 yard dash or swimming where a stop watch makes the final decision. Stats are not that accurate and there's way to many variables. I mean they don't even compete on the same field or under the same rules or same lineup or the same spot in the lineup. How 2011 Kemp is "not even close" to as good as 2012 Trout totally evades me.

And I never compared Trout and Kemp like you are. I know(and admit) Trout is better than Kemp after these last 2 seasons but that was not the original point I made that you and BDK were debating me on so forget about it.

And unrelated but out of curiosity.... if your advanced metrics are so telling, go back and explain how the OAK A's lost the World Series in 1988 and 1990. I'd find it hard to believe that the A's lineup didn't beat the 1988 Dodger's lineup man for man in WAR and it wasn't even close. Again in 1990 vs. the Reds probably similar. If baseball was played with stats then why can nobody predict the outcome every time? Because there is other forces in play.

He easily is the greatest of all time and ARod may have been better....but yeah if you want to avoid the steroid talk...it's best to ignore him and ARod. :shifty:

Only responding to this part since I dislike this misconception: But anyone who uses advanced stats to say "Team X will win the world series because of stat Y" is using them wrong... I don't think anyone here uses them that way. Your example for the playoffs is a good one in showing that the playoffs are a crap shoot shit show in which the team favored, or even with the better on paper, regular season roster is not always going to win. Look at the last three years: The Giants and Cards weren't the best team in the playoffs, they just played the best during that time period or got everything clicking when it mattered.

Advanced stats are a great way for us to compare players for things they actually control, trying to take away as many of these other forces you talk about out of play. Of course theres ALWAYS going to be other forces we can't diagnose, but I think these advanced stats do a much better job of taking away these outside forces rather than stats like wins, RBIs, Runs, etc.

Nobody can predict the outcome every time, but it helps get us a better idea of what is going on. If Matt Kemp has a .121 BABIP for a month we can see that he's getting shit luck and that we can see that once that rises he'll get better numbers. It's not 100% guaranteed that he'll raise it and that maybe something else is happening, but it's a good indicator that maybe something else is happening. Again, just one example, hopefully I answered that part correctly
