Dodgers are targeting top young Cuban right-hander Yadier Alvarez
    April 10, 2015 1:04 pm ET

The Dodgers are said to be very interested in hard-throwing young Cuban right-hander Yadier Alvarez.

Los Angeles, which seems intent on continuing to be a big international player, has extensively scouted Alvarez, with team president Andrew Friedman even traveling to see him in the Dominican Republic, where Alvarez has established residency. The Dodgers signed Cuban third baseman Hector Olivera recently for $62.5 million over six years, and appear to be targeting Alvarez now.

Alvarez, who throws 94-97 mph but has hit 99, is petitioning MLB to allow him to sign in this signing period rather than wait until July 2. There is no word yet on whether Alvarez's petition will be approved.

The Dodgers have been strong internationally for years, having signed Cuban Yasiel Puigand Korean Hyun-Jin Ryu in recent seasons.

The Nationals, Blue Jays, Rangers, Phillies, Cardinals, Giants and Twins are among other teams showing interest in Alvarez. The Diamondbacks could become involved if he wins the petition, but they are among teams that have only $300,000 to spend in the period beginning July 2. The Yankees and Red Sox are also in that boat. (The first version of this blog had that information incorrectly reversed.

Let's sign all the Int'l FA's. What could possibly go wrong? Sure we might need to find a way to field a couple extra minor league teams, but oh well..

if all goes well..between this Alvarez kid, Urias, De Leon, and maybe Holmes ( who still might be a reliever) we'll still be lookin alright in a few years when it comes to the spots behind CK.

I don't think we draft a pitcher out of high school in the first round to be a reliever.

Well why didn't you just fucking say that instead of beating around the bush? That's all you had to do, give me a year. Was that so fucking difficult?

Just for the record, when did Atlanta get rich? They're moving out of Atlanta because they can't get the city or county to pay for their ballpark. The cheap fuckers are moving away from the namesake of their team because they want someone else to pay for their field. How do they have plenty of money to spend? Oh, you mean the money of all those contracts they just ditched?

The Braves dropped from 14th in payroll to 23rd this year. Last year was their highest payroll ever. I don't see them going back there any time soon.

So, a winning record is "not sucking". Would you say the same if the team were the Dodgers? If the Dodgers finished 82-80 in 3rd place you would say they didn't suck? You'd be happy with that? Lmao.

all you had to do was read, pumpkin. like i said, it was all there and you even responded to one of those very posts. you were the only one making declarations and not backing them up. take your head out of your ass.

actually, plenty of people in Atlanta feel like Turner Field is fine. i mean the stadium is only 20 years old. so it's likely much less about the org not getting the city to pay to get them out of terrible conditions, and moreso about the fact that they just found someone who's happy and willing to make them happy. that's just good business. it's not like they're moving to Jacksonville.

they sent Heyward's and Kimbrel's contracts out, but they just spent a gang of long term money on Freeman, Simmons, and Teheran as well as Markakis. but yeah, they also cleared some future money to spend by dealing both of those Uptons. and Hart grabbed a bunch of young talent in dealing all those players..one of them the Braves will end up signing pretty soon here because they're smart..a Shelby Miller who has ace potential.

i'm thinking more along the lines of 86-76..2012 Dodgers-ish..who did not suck.

you know who sucks? you. :lewinsky:

More proof that preseason stats mean nothing.

Here in Seattle. The idiots said this:

"Walker now holds the all-time Mariner's record for lowest ERA in one preseason."

And people wonder why I dislike the fan base so much.

There really are no winners in a 19 inning game during the first week of the season.
