If you're just starting out just go to a big 5 and start collecting clubs. I swing my dads old King Snakes (King Cobra) knock offs lol and they do the job. They suck, but my game is finally getting to the point where I can score a little with them. Once I get a full time job im definiltely testing out a nice set but not now

    Is golf a sport?
As in will it give me a decent workout?
Not trying to be a dick here, seriously asking.
Im not into country club sports at all, but I miss sports, i miss the action, the trash, the friendly competition where winning means shit, and the actual perspiration and muscle interaction of playing ball.
I have back and neck issues as well as arthritis in most joints including the hips.
But i feel the need to play something and I dont want to really start playing video game sports again. And fantasy basketball is not the same.
I cant really play real sports anymore because of the high chance of career ending injury everytime i try to do things while moving at enough speed to break a sweat.
The most i can do is walk the hills but other than with friends once in a while that gets pretty boring.
    So golf.
Can i play it, will it break me?
I mean physically not spiritually ;)
Is it just walking around carrying a heavy weight and swinging a piece of iron or a stick a few times during the walk?
Will it give me some sort of sports like feeling in my body when i combine walking and swinging at things?
Because there is a very expensive CC around here that i sometimes visit when i have to take a piss and cant make it up the hill in time.
No chance of playing there for me, but if golf allows you to feel like you have done some form of coordinated exercises i may just go make a series of holes around the property where i live and buy some of those used clubs yall going on about.
I could use tiki torches as flagpoles and play at night.
Hmm, i could just line some gopher holes with plastic cups and not even need to dig.
I was decent at mini golf when i wanted to show off in front of easy to impress girls as a teenager.
    Do those skills translate?
    How bout stickball skills?
    Billiards?
I could just play softball i guess... but i hear that game is serious business.

Somehow Rube, I think you share the George Carlin opinion about golfing/golf courses...

The object of golf is to play the least amount of golf. What a strange sport.

I used to think golf was the dumbest, worthless, waste of time.......before I started playing. I went to play with a friend of mine because he had a spot open and said I'd like it. I had the day off so I said fuck it I'll do it. That was about 13 years ago. Been playing ever since.

Only thing that has kept me in shape over the years is playing a lot of tennis. I tried golf, but I am god awful and hit just about everything in the woods.

Tennis is a lot of fun, though I rarely play it and I'm terrible at it (doesn't help that you have to pay a yearly fee to use any of the public tennis courts in NYC). Never played golf in my life though I figured I'd want to give it a shot sometime. Basketball is more my thing, though I haven't had a chance to play it in a while

Well then. Play links courses or courses that haven't any woods around them.

I played once and was in the woods all day, too. Fell
down an embankment into poison sumac. Got bitten by a marmot. Got sunburned on top of the sumac. Had to get a rabies shot.
    Golf sucks.

Dood, what could be easier than hitting a golf ball? It's just SITTING there, it isn't MOVING.

    (Snicker, smirk, guffaw.)

Haha, I was pretty cocky before my first time on the course and it was a rude awakening. It doesn't help that I was trying to hit the ball like a forehand in tennis and making experienced golfers around me throw up looking at my swing. I'd settle for being able to play without making an ass out of myself. I know I'll never be any good, but it's a sport I'd like to play in the future since my knees won't allow me to play tennis forever.

Several high average baseball players have commented that hitting a golf ball sitting still (with control) is harder than hitting a 98 mph fastball or a biting curve. I've often said that you either love it or hate it. It either consumes you or you reject it entirely. There is no middle ground.

    Golf is just like baseball.

Mother fucking game breaks your fucking heart right when you least expect it.

Then you pull out that extra club you bring so you can break your generic club instead of your good one. Or just throw the fucker as far as you can (without saying FORE!)

Of all the games in the world, golf is the one that is the most mental (I mean that both in the American way meaning "thinking" and mental in the UK way meaning "crazy").

That ball, sitting on the grass, sand, or tee......just staring back at you....with 3 other people looking at you.....even though they are mostly likely people you know and probably actually like....it is the most intimidating thing on earth. It's purely a mindf*ck. That is what makes the game so hard. Nothing to fight against except your own mind.

Imagine doing that for a living in front of thousands of people and millions more on TV.

No wonder Tiger started screwing the entire female population.
