Why is Garnett still trying to play? Might be a hell of a hall of fame induction class with KG, Kobe, Duncan, Dirk and Pierce, though...I hope they all retire together.

Garnett should retire at once but basic greed drives him onward
Pierce should retire at once, despite a new 3 year deal but basic greed drives him onward
Duncan should retire within 2 years but basic greed drives him onward
Dirk should retire within a year but basic greed drives him onward
Kobe should retire at the end of the year but basic greed drives him onward

If they did all retire at once it would be nice to salute the change of guard

Each of them thinks that they have a chance at a ring or they would've already retired.. most are too myopic to see that they have virtually no chance.

So lay odds on each the ancients getting a ring next year...

In a criminal case, the prosecution has to prove all elements of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt. This means that they have to show with a near 100% certainty that the defendant committed the crime. On the other hand, a defendant can raise affirmative defenses (think insanity or self defense) and the standard of proof is a preponderance of the evidence. This basically means he only needs to show that it was more likely than not that his defense is valid (think 51%).

I agree. He also has to show that his belief was honest (subjective standard), reasonable (objective standard), and necessary. Like I said above, his standard of proof is lower (51%), but it's a little hard to think that punching her was a necessary response. The Florida statute says that battery is a first degree misdemeanor, which is punishable up to 1 year in prison. I'm not familiar with sentencing guidelines, but I imagine a showing of imperfect self-defense would net lower punishment - maybe just a fine, or a shorter prison term.
