Lakers News: L.A. Still Has $2.8 Million Room Exception Available

The Los Angeles Lakers made most of their off-season moves official on Thursday as the team traded for center Roy Hibbert and signed guard Lou Williams and forward Brandon Bass. However, the team still has some more tools in free agency.

    – Have you seen the ‘Lakers Nation’ phone case? –

General manager Mitch Kupchak says the Lakers still have their Room Exception available worth $2.8 million according to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

Mitch said Lakers still have room exception available, wasn't used on Bass. Also, Roy Hibbert waived trade kicker

    — Mark Medina (@MarkG_Medina) July 10, 2015

This is a huge deal as the Lakers still have holes that can be filled on the roster and can offer more than a minimum contract in order to do so. In particular, the Lakers are relatively thin at the small forward position as all signs point to Kobe Bryant starting there once the season starts.

Players such as Dorell Wright, K.J. McDaniels, Will Barton, and Alonzo Gee are all players who could fill that void for the Lakers. It is worth noting that both McDaniels and Barton are restricted free agents, so the team may target someone easier to obtain.

The Lakers made some very shrewd moves this summer after striking out on their original targets, and doing so while keeping their room exception was an excellent thing to do. The Lakers moves don’t seem to be done just yet, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another player brought in.

If Kobe is finally moving to the 3 spot then that gives us the ability to better match up with the quick teams like GS.
A backcourt of combo guards Lou Will and D Russ will be quick on offense.
Defense will still suck but if we play fast with Kobe and either Bass or Randle in the wings then Hibbert can stay behind and protect the rim.
Bass and Williams make a real good one two punch off the bench.
Between Russell, Williams and Clarkson we will have PG covered in case of injury.
And if Kobe gets hurt Williams has no conscience for creating his own shot and taking on that type of role.

Indystar is reporting that Roy Hibbert waived the 2.2 million dollar trade bonus to join the Lakers so that they can try to sign another player.

He will, after the year is over he's going to reduce his salary to 0 dollars...

... and then Mitch will sign him to a 2 year 62 million dollar deal.

I'm only half joking about that. I'm predicting Kobe will get 2 years about 40 million next year.

    I wouldn't be surprised.

Is there any chance Kobe might be coaxed into taking a vet minimum contract as a sixth man type?

No way. I think that giving Kobe that stupid contract was an under the radar way of tanking (knowing we couldn't sign anyone else to improve a shit team) Its all about the youth now and we don't know if Kobe can play even 35 games.

I'd tell Kobe to shove it before I'd give him that.

Kobe shouldn't take a pay cut wtf. Nor should any player for that fact. Tim Duncan you a bitch

Kobe has it right. Instead of asking the players to be "team" players and take a pay cut, why don't the owners be a "team" player and pay the luxury tax. Why do the players get all the blame for not taking pay cuts or making good money. These players only have a limited time to collect as much money as they can from their playing abilities. An owner has a lifetime to make 100s of millions of dollars and with how much they profit, spending above the luxury isn't that big. Let my nigga Kobe get paid. Dudes done so much for this organization the least they can do is compensate him with 20m

If Kobe's too proud to take a pay cut, then that's his perogative, but I wasn't asking the question because I thought he was worth $20M per year. He's not. He is a twice, severely injured guard/SF, that's reaching 40 and no longer has the speed or jumping ability to be the same scorer or defender he once was.

He hasn't played a full season in two years, and according to recent reports, hasn't even shot a basketball yet.

He is worth the vet min.....maybe a smidge more. If he doesn't see that, then it's not about asking him to do us a favor. It's about having an over inflated view of where he's at in this stage of his career.
