I did not miss your point. I just see it differently. I do think LENGTH of contract is more important in today's economy/market. Teams are locking up younger guys for longer and FAs for shorter contracts (the outliers excluded). I agree that an overpriced and underperforming veteran can hamstring a team in terms of roster spot--see Vernon Wells, Zito for two years etc, and Ryan Howard. I do think that it is only time Money (actual money) plays are part. If you sign Cano for 7 years for the following contract it works out: 25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 6, and 5. What you have done is paid him like a utility infielder for last two years of his contract. He is thus worth the money. However, if he is being paid 25 per for the last two years, he is not worth the money given his decrease in production. But, if there is nothing in the farm or little in FA who can come close to his production, is he worth the 25 if it means the missing piece in a World Series run? Time and Money are both important. More often than not, contracts are dependent on many other factors too: How deep is the farm system? How good is the FA market? How adept at is the GM at trading for talent?

I liked the Blanton deal when it was made, then I hated the Blanton deal when the asshole pitched. Didn't really matter, Kershaw could barely muster wins back then the way our offense sucked donkey cock.

Yeah, we go through this kind of shit frequently with the GM for all time, Ned Colletti. Now we have the necklace of 240 lb. albatross Josh beckett , who was very, very good, but now sucks apatosaurus penis. Ned likes this...he's into sea-going birds.
One day we'll make a deal with Seattle for some old dumbfuck pitcher (probably Harang-utan's return), and he'll suck, and it will be truly The Ryhme of the Ancient Mariner.
By the way, some woman told me it's not the length that counts, it's the width...did she mean contracts, ya think?
