Olney uses WAR. He doesn't even mention Trout's glove or baserunning abilities.

WAR is a good stat but I feel like it's misleading. Makes a guy with a phenomenal bat with bad to OK defense have a lower WAR or "value" than a player with not as good as an offensive season but they have a better glove and are good baserunners.

Have you thought that it might be because that stuff matters quite a bit? A win is estimated to be worth 10 runs, so every ten runs you contribute is 1 WAR.

These two guys have similar offensive numbers, Miggy's are a little better. Let's give Miggy a slight advantage going into it.

Trout plays CF, Miggy plays 3B, that's half a win to Trout at least.

Trout plays GG CF defense, Miggy plays 3B poorly. That's a win and a half swing.

Trout is probably the best baserunner in the game, considering his 90%+ SB rate, Miggy is fat and slow. Give Trout another win.

Trout plays in a pitchers park, Detroit is neutral. That's another half win to Trout if you even out the park factors.

The fact is WAR factors all of these things in, that's why people use it. And when you look at it like this, it's not really that close.

Quite frankly, the only thing Miggy does better offensively then Trout is hit jacks, and it's not a HUGE gap.

The defense and speed is not even up for debate.

    • Re-sign League
    • Extend Kershaw
    • Sign 4th OF
    • Sign SP
That's all I got. We're miles ahead in a better position this year than we did last year, that's for sure. Gonna be hard for Ned to fuck the offseason up.

BTW, I noticed Castellanos played RF yesterday. Did they give up on him playing 2nd?

Is the only argument for Cabrera > Trout is that he won the triple crown? This debate is absurd. Trout is the best player in the world/MVP by far

were you like not even around last year? why the hell should the team standing make any difference? Oh wait.... maybe it should... because the Angels won one more game than the Tigers. oops.

Yup. So much of the roster is set, even backups.

I like how public opinion is Miggy carried his team to the playoffs. He did it himself and had no help. None from Verlander, Prince Fielder, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, and Austin Jackson. Nope. All by himself.

Oh and of course he was the one who located Detroit in the center of the country so they could win the worst division in baseball. All Miguel Torres Cabrera.

    Cmon now people.

The Dodgers had a total of 1 pinch hit HR all year until Bobby's HR. not gonna get it done. Need a legitimate threat off the bench. If Crawford is healthy, there really isn't much of a place for Gwynn's services. It's nice having a fast guy who can scrap and play good D as an extra outfielder, but he's just not gonna be playing at all likely. We saw it when Vic came over. And the truth is, Gwynn isn't very good either. With a full time LFer, we need to go find a guy who can hit the ball out of the park on the bench.

Agreed, a good 4th OF is a must. Hairston is gonna be valuable as a bench bat and not having to start every day, and Dee is our backup IF/speed guy for now. Need a guy like Chris Heisey or Raul Ibanez.

Only reason I can see Cabrera winning the MVP is because the writers know Trout will have years of MVP opportunities because of how young he is.

Trout deserves it because once he joined the team, they turned it around. Their pitching fucked them over the last two months of the season, but Trout was solid all year.

I don't see how Trout can win when his team didn't make the playoffs. Trout was the best player but not Most Valuable. imo

Let me just say I'm still bitter as fuck Kemp didn't win it last year because we didn't make the playoffs.

No I wasn't around last year and team standing makes a difference whether you think it should or not. My guess is you are trying to compare this to Kemp/Braun last year. If they switched teams i'm pretty sure Kemp would have won it. Angels won one more game but are they still playing? No they aren't.

Who said he did it by himself? Trout doesn't have pujols or weaver on his squad?

    Cabrera is the MVP
I get all the love for Trout, and appreciate all the statistical arguments...
but Cabrera won the Triple Crown
    the Triple Crown!
I'm not sure everyone understands the magnitude of that feat
it hasn't been done in 45 years, and only 16 times in the history of baseball
14 times it was done by (then, future) hall of famers
guys like Mantle, Williams, Gehrig, Foxx, Cobb...
Roger Maris' and Henry Aaron's HR records fell due to players using PEDs
and yet no one was able to get a Triple Crown
    that is until now
    Cabrera is the MVP
you can throw all the other stats and figures at me you want -- I don't care
because no matter what you come up with, you can't show me anyone in the AL with a higher BA and/or more HR and RBI than Cabrera
    Cabrera is the MVP
Trout is the Rookie of the Year
