It would appear so. Eric Stephen @truebluela 11m Still not sure if Maholm signed a major or minor league deal, but he is here Dylan Hernandez @dylanohernandez 11m Paul Maholm went in and out of the #Dodgers clubhouse. Evidently, he's taking a physical right now. Dylan Hernandez @dylanohernandez 11m #Dodgers won't confirm they have a deal with Maholm.
mas... Dodgers Appear Likely To Sign Paul MaholmBy Charlie Wilmoth [February 8, 2014 at 12:23pm CST]12:23pm: Maholm is likely to sign a minor-league deal with the Dodgers, MLB.com's Ken Gurnick tweets. That Maholm would receive a minor-league deal is somewhat surprising, given his relative youth and history of reasonably strong performances.10:08am: Judging from events in the Dodgers' clubhouse today, the team appears likely to sign starting pitcher Paul Maholm. Maholm currently has a locker, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times notes (via Twitter). Hernandez also tweets that Maholm is in the clubhouse, apparently to take a physical. The Dodgers were reportedly a candidate to sign Bronson Arroyo, so Arroyo's recent decision to sign with the Diamondbacks may have led the Dodgers to pursue Maholm as an alternative.Maholm, 31, posted a 4.41 ERA with 6.2 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 153 innings with the Braves last season. He made $6.5MM after the Braves picked up an option on the one-year deal he originally signed with the Cubs prior to the 2012 season. The lefty is one of many starting pitchers remaining on the free-agent market, joining names like Chris Capuano and Suk-Min Yoon in a tier below top options A.J. Burnett, Ubaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes projected that Maholm would get a one-year, $7MM deal this offseason. __
Maholm on a minor league deal is fucking phenomenal, I wouldn't mind him on a major league deal, hell. Awesome
Turns out Maholm's deal is guaranteed with a base of $1.5M and loaded with incentives. still better than Arroyo at 2/24.
Dodgers Sign Paul Maholm By Aaron Steen [February 8 at 6:04pm CST] The Dodgers have signed Paul Maholm to a one-year, $1.5MM major-league deal, Jim Bowden of ESPN tweets. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times was the first to report the signing (Twitter link). Ken Gurnick of MLB.com tweets that Maholm's deal contains "significant" incentives. Someone call the law. The Dodgers just committed highway robbery. One really bad year (for him) and he gets a minor league deal at 31. Damn.
^ way better [...] it comes as a surprise that the Dodgers were able to sign Maholm for just a $1.5MM guarantee in an offseason in which Jason Vargas, a similar pitcher, received a four-year, $32MM deal. __
Let me put this in perspective for anyone still bitching about Arroyo. Both are, at this point in their careers, back of the rotation guys. Arroyo is slipping and headed to AZ where fastballs are destroyed. He will give you 200 innings but--as I said before--if those 200 innings cost you 30 games, what the fuck good are they? He is getting 2/23 mil without the buy out or 1/16mil with the buyout. Mahaolm is a third lefty for us. He is on a minor league deal for 1.5. Put that in perspective. Vargas got 4/32. Hughes got 3/24. Volquez got 5 mil for 1 year. I love the heavy incentive thing. That means the more money he gets, the better he is doing for us.
can you imagine the depth if josh and bills return to form?... [...] Maholm adds depth to a Dodgers rotation that includes Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dan Haren. In addition, veterans Josh Beckett and Chad Billingsley continue to make comebacks from injuries. __
Dodgers Sign Paul Maholm By Aaron Steen [February 8 at 6:04pm CST] The Dodgers have signed Paul Maholm to a one-year, $1.5MM major-league deal, Jim Bowden of ESPN tweets. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times was the first to report the signing, and adds that the lefty can earn as much as $6.5MM this year with incentives (Twitter links). The framework for a deal appeared to be in place this morning, when Hernandez reported that the starter had a locker prepared and was present in the Dodgers clubhouse, apparently to take a physical. However, confirmation of the agreement wasn't available until now. The 31-year-old Maholm's eventual contract comes in significantly smaller than the one-year, $7MM deal that he was predicted to receive by MLBTR's Tim Dierkes. While he wasn't in the top tier of this winter's free agent starters, it comes as a surprise that the Dodgers were able to sign him for just a $1.5MM guarantee in an offseason in which Jason Vargas, a fellow 31-year-old lefty, received a four-year, $32MM contract. Vargas has the better track record of durability and has spent most of his career in the AL, so he likely has the edge. However, they've posted strikingly similar results for their careers: Maholm checks in with a lifetime ERA of 4.28, while Vargas' mark is 4.30. Maholm has struck out 5.8 batters per nine innings and walked 2.9 per nine for his career, compared with Vargas' rates of 5.9 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9. In addition, Maholm was good for 153 innings in 2013, while Vargas managed 150 frames. Ken Gurnick of MLB.com was the first to report that the deal contained incentives. __
It would seem Maholm wants to win and this deal gives him a chance to get a multi year deal next winter.
I've always thought Maholm was an intriguing guy, I liked to think maybe we could get him as a long man for the pen. I can't say I'm too excited about him, but maybe Honeycutt sees something. Against the West, Maholm SUCKS. Career numbers are not good. W/L 2-3 Arizona 1-8 Colorado 2-5 Los Angeles 1-6 San Diego In the corresponding home parks of the West he is a combined 1-12. On the other hand, he is 12-4 at Wrigley field, so we should make sure he starts every game there. Fuck it, I'm gonna have another beer.
In half of his starts at Wrigley, it was his home park (11 starts in 2012). Also, his career ERA is 3.59 at home and 5.04 on the road. (same number of starts) Those splits were even more decisive last year.
I've got that beer for Codge. I'd consider it an honor to pour you a dusty old cold beer from the Dodger Lounge old fella.
