By claiming him they also block Arizona from making a trade with the Phillies if he had cleared waivers.
The D-backs have a worse record than us so they passed, the order of standings is reversed. 5:16pm: The Dodgers were awarded Lee's claiming rights, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. This means that all NL teams with a record worse than the Dodgers' 56-50 mark (every NL team except the Reds, Nationals, Pirates, Braves, Giants and Cardinals) first passed on Lee.
Gotta love the owners saying I don't give a fuck about money go out and get what you gotta get so we can win.
I love it too but why get Blanton 1st if they put a claim on Lee. I guess management is really concerned with the starters and they could not wait to see the Lee claim to work out.
i think the concern is that capuano might be out of gas, harang is going to continue to get lit up like his last start and bills will always be bills. nice to be able to switch out guys as starter/long relievers too.
@truebluela: Ted Lilly not starting for Rancho tonight. Suffered setback with shoulder, might throw bullpen in next few days
Yeah, if they really think anyone would fork over top prospects and eat that massive contract they are dreaming.
Just saw on the ESPN ticker that the Phillies pulled Cliff Lee off the waiver wire, not sure if that just means that they wont just hand him over and they're still talking or if the deal is dead.
Ownership did mention they might get 2 starting pitchers at the deadline. They got 0, but they appear to have no problem with picking up more than one guy.
This. The Dodgers are insane right now, and if the Phillies aren't willing to take advantage then they a dumb phucks.
Eric Stephen @truebluela Ned Colletti, when asked if the Dodgers were done making moves: "We're done until the next one."
Right but if no one claimed him as was expected the Phillies could have done a deal with anyone. Now their choice is us or keep Lee.
Yeah a common tactic to block players potentially going to rival teams. However in this case I think we're at least slightly interested but the asking price is stupid
I think we are very interested and would not be the least surprised. No one beside us is going to take that salary much less give up prospects. We can pick up the salary and not need to give up much else. The Phillies need salary relief and we still don't know all that was in the agreement between MLB and Frank to sell the team. The commissioner has authority over certain things that determine the tax right off the various teams can claim. The other owners were pissed about a number of things in the agreement and we may be witnessing some of the outcomes. Lots of questions about where Walters is getting the money. There are a number of probable explainations but not fully confirmed.
