Dodgers To Sign First-Rounder Grant Holmes
By Jeff Todd [June 16, 2014 at 9:49pm CDT]

The Dodgers have a deal in place with first-round pick Grant Holmes, the high school righty tells Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com. Though terms remain unavailable, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter that the University of Florida commit is expected to receive a bonus that lands above his $1,980,500 slot allotment.

Draft observers viewed Holmes as being well worth the 22nd pick with which he was selected. ESPN.com’s Keith Law ranked him as the sixth-best prospect available, saying that Holmes was the “most polished” high school arm in the draft. MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis rated him at 11th, noting that he has increased his fastball velocity while also bringing a hard curve and promising change to the mound. Baseball America had him in the 16th slot.

The Dodgers went at-slot to sign their second through fifth-round picks, but saved about $262K collectively on their seventh, ninth, and tenth-round choices. Los Angeles has yet to sign righty Brock Stewart (sixth round) or catcher Hunter Redman (eighth round), both of whom are college juniors. (Information via the MLBDailyDish.com draft signing tracker.) Entering the draft with about $4.95MM in achievable pool space, the Dodgers could also potentially spend up to $247K more without giving up a pick in next year’s draft.

Lee tosses seven shutout frames at Triple-A
Right-hander ranked fourth among Dodgers' top prospects
    By Teddy Cahill | MLB.com -- 30 minutes ago

Right-hander Zach Lee, the Dodgers' No. 4 prospect, threw seven scoreless innings Thursday, helping lead Triple-A Albuquerque to a 5-0 victory at Omaha.

Lee, ranked No. 54 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list, held the Storm Chasers to three hits -- all singles -- and two walks. He struck out three batters and induced 14 groundouts. He threw 102 pitches in the seven innings, matching the longest start of his career.

Thursday was Lee's second scoreless outing of the season and first since he didn't allow a run in six innings April 16 against El Paso.

With the victory, Lee improved to 6-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 15 starts. He has struck out 60 and walked 25 in 83 innings.

Center fielder Joc Pederson went 2-for-4 with a walk Thursday. He is hitting .323/.435/.582 and leads the Pacific Coast League with a 1.017 OPS in 70 games this season.

Some great-to-see numbers in this article, the most important of which are probably the 7 innings and 102 pitches.

No place in the rotation for him unfortunately. Hopefully he gets called up when someone goes down instead of Maholm. I want to see what he's got against major league hitters.

Can't we just send down some of our shitty relievers (or DFA them) and bring him up along with Paco? Stick him in the bully and see what happens.

That would defeat the purpose, namely getting away from expensive free agents and relying more on home grown talent at a savings. If he can be a starter on the big league club then he is an investment in the future. If we send him to the bullpen, then he's just another arm in the organization. Stay the course, trust the Kasten.

He's still in RC. Still raking, so hopefully he gets promoted soon. Kyle Farmer got moved up from low-A over the break.
