What should be Ned's the Top 3 priorities for this offseason not including Kershaw's extension (which is the most obvious)? here are mine: 1. rebuilt the bp: Paco was great, but he was burned in the end. Also, I dont like his delivery AT ALL. Its like a disaster waiting to happen. Right now the only locks for the bp are Jansen, Withrow, Beli (although I wouldnt trust him right away as setup), Paco (only as lefty specialist) and League (I think he can regain his old shape). Howell will get a multi year somewhere after the great season he had, and I dont see Ned going after him. Wilson will get a closing job somewhere. We need power arms, period! 2. Get a solid catcher: Yes, we all love AJ, but his defense was on display in the series vs the Cards, costing game 2 and having several other miscues. Sure, he has been a feel good story for the last 2 years, but his offensive numbers arent anything impressive, and his so adored walk rate has dropped. Last year he was .238/.318/.364, being outperformed by Chris Iannetta. I can live with some offensive loss from the C, but he needs to block those balls in the ground and frame a pitch... AJ wasnt doing it... 3. Lock Hanley: I'm not sure if he can play SS in a year or two, but this guy is a force. They need to lock him at least to play 3B. We saw what his bat can do, and if Kemp can become KEMP again, and Puig matures, this team will be set in the middle for several years. what are your priorities?
Considering we signed Guerrero 1) Resign Uribe. 2) Resign Wilson and/or Howell, if not sign no other big name RP and go from within and one year reclamation projects. 3) Figure out the OF situation. Trade one of them, give SVS a bigger responsibility and hold onto Joc with plans of him being the first guy up when someone gets hurt.
If we were to jump into FA, a few guys I'd consider are Bartolo Colon and Tim Lincecum. 4's/5's that can be swingmen at any point, as well as innings eaters would be nice.
I don't think he would, and he certainly won't get one anywhere so then just let him test the market and he'll come back. I'd go 2/16 for him though.
3B - Uribe is good for a 2 year deal, not longer, but he displayed many many clutch defensive stops that we grew to rely on. Have Mac pressure him to stand 1 ball closer to the plate aqnd he might not miss so many outside pitches 2B - Marky is on the bubble, if we have cash to burn then fine, but he'll suffice until we can get Guerrero up to MLB standards... IF Guerrero can hit MLB pitches that is C - Upgrading the C position is vital... not so much talent available but we still need something better than a .238 player who makes passed balls a daily occurrence RP - Resign Wilson... he proved his salt; Howell wasn't bad either. Beli showed signs of competency but then for reasons unknown would go awry; Paco telegraphing every pitch like a little leaguer scares the shit out of me, even if he did get away with it so often... waste Marmol and his ungainly follow through... League should be on a short leash with a low $$ exposure or tossed altogether OF - I'm not at all concerned about having 4 OF's since 3 of 4 appear gimp twice weekly, And I wouldn't trade Joc, yet, even if he did lead the AA team in K's
Molina really exposed how bad AJ is. His pitchers got those 3-4 inches off the plate because he's a pro at making balls look like strikes. Now that Guerrero is signed, catcher is a big priority. 2. Sort out the managing situation one way or the other. 3. Lock up the 'pen arms.
VRP's list is really good but I'd also really like a upgrade over AJ. I know Brian McCann would be awesome but some of the reports suggest he is going to be grossly overpaid (around 100M) and I'm not digging that.
sadly, no... the guy is a good catcher that consistently hits 20 HRs and hits for decent average... middle of the order bat... the problem is that the catcher class is Dee Gordon thin... McCann, Salty, Ruiz, Navarro, Pierzynski, Buck, Soto...
It's truly sad about AJ...it really is. But the guy is not a great defensive catcher. Offensively, he's probably better than we expected, but still leaves some longing for more power, more frequently. I think we need more pitching, both starting and in the BP. Of course, Bills is a huge question, as is Kemp, all yet to be answered. Being that life is too short, I've been told, I'm saying they both hit the successful comeback trail...because if they don't, especially Matt, it will stop us from making a much needed move in the OF. Or if we don't make one, being unsure about him, then we will have that gelatinous roster spot on hold again for God knows how long. We should know pretty quick....maybe. Unless he trips and reinjures his shoulder/ankle/foot on some slippery, gooey substance in Rhianna's house or something...y'know. Or gets clipped by james Loney in his Maserati. Bills will have rust on him a foot thick, because rust never sleeps. If he can, start rehabbing him ...uh....like tomorrow. But it could be an awesome front four.
^Wasn't Beckett hinting at retirement? I haven't read anything about him for awhile. Maybe we just have to wait until ST.
I'm thinking we need a really solid backup catcher. Try to find the heir apparent. Maybe get a couple of them, and see how it works out. We used to break in pretty good major league catchers at one time. Of course, some of them were dealing roids back then - who knew?
I like FeEx. Most good defensive catchers aren't good hitters early on but get better. All of the Molinas fit that bill.
