Dodgers Are ‘Heavy On’ 18-Year-Old Yadier Alvarez by Vincent Samperio | Dodgers Nation — February 12, 2015 Rumors have been surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers in recent days, as they are expected to be finalists for a pair of Cuban infielders. Yoan Moncada and Hector Olivera have been working out for teams in the past few weeks, and the Dodgers have been in attendance. They are expected to be in the mix for both. Also, they were linked to another Cuban in right-hander Jorge Hernandez, who is looking for a work visa in the U.S. Well, now there’s another Cuban prospect and once again the Dodgers are among the teams rumored to be interested. According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, an 18-year-old Cuban pitcher is the next big name from the country: Jeff Passan ✔ @JeffPassan Follow Scout buzz: The Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Phillies among the teams expected to be in heavy on 18-year-old Cuban flamethrower Yadier Alvarez. 12:23 PM - 12 Feb 2015 Alvarez worked out in the Dominican Republic with the Dodgers in attendance via Jon Heyman of CBS Sports: Jon Heyman ✔ @JonHeymanCBS Follow dodgers among many teams in DR to see alvarez hit 93-97. the comp: young ramon martinez 1:45 PM - 11 Feb 2015 Alvarez would be subject to international signing limits because he’s 18 and hasn’t pitched at least five years in the Serie Nacional. Reports have the teenager in the mid-90s with a plus-slider and change up. He’s listed at 6’3, 175 pounds, but still has time to fill out due to his young age. Because of the rules in place, the Dodgers could sign both Moncada and Alvarez, but it would have to during the signing period that ends in July. While it’s all just speculation at the moment, it appears the Dodgers could have even more of an international presence this year.
So a couple of outlets have us as favorites for Moncada, man that's exciting. Olivera would be a luxury at this point, but even though we had a bad taste in our mouths with Guerrero and Erisbel, I'm gonna give some benefit of the doubt to a new set of guys on this at the minimum. Although lots of questions about Olivera are valid
Olivera could give them options..as in, maybe they could give Rollins a 1yr extension and keep Seager in the minors until the 2017 season..that way Moncada and Seager would get a couple seasons in the minors to work together as a middle infield tandem. Work on the chemistry and sort of grow together. Olivera and Rollins may do well enough..and we have Hernandez, Barnes, and Guerrero as options for 2B..maybe they let Kendrick walk and collect the draft pick there? Or maybe Moncada's future is in CF, where he's also played some in the past. Maybe Joc moves to LF. Lots of options, but Olivera could be seen as an immediate necessity.
