I'd be fine with Ellis/Skip at 2B next year because we're fucking awesome as is....but I'd rather have Kendrick.
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers were close to agreement on a seven-year, $210 million extension earlier this season with Clayton Kershaw But Rosenthal writes that the Dodgers front office "backed off ... and the two sides have not negotiated in months." That deal would have made Kershaw the highest-paid pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball and there's still a chance he can command that kind of sum if he finishes the 2013 season the way he has started it. Kershaw, a free agent this winter, boasts a 1.72 ERA and 188/43 K/BB ratio through 198 1/3 innings. WTF? Sign him before he asks for $300!!
Only way that would make sense from a baseball standpoint is if it were a 3-team deal that got the Dodgers Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez, and sent out Crawford or Ethier (along with Kershaw) while retaining no salary.
I might get burned at the stake, but for that amount of money, years and opt clause. After this year it might be better for us to trade him. Long term contracts with pitchers for that amount of dough has never worked out, and really with that clause he could JD Drew us.
Clayton is a once in a generation pitcher along the lines of Koufax and Gibson and Carlton, pay the man. It's not only his itching on the field it's his tireless charity work off of it. The goodwill he generates and intrinsic value he brings to a franchise can't be measured in dollars. We as diehard Dodger fans talk about a trade that happened years ago when traded Pedro Martinez and still ache at the thought, I don't want that feeling again. Pay the man.
Trading him would be a no-win situation, only once in the last 8 (roughly) times an ace has been traded has the team trading the player gotten fair value, most of those deals were taking back prospects. So like I said previously, the only deal that would make sense would be one that would bring in Giancarlo Stanton and an impact young arm (doesn't have to be Jose Fernandez, because it could be somebody from the 3rd team as the Marlins wouldn't pay anybody $30M) and dump either Ethier or Crawford to the the 3rd team, while retaining no salary. While the Dodgers and Team C could send a boatload of prospects to the Marlins.
There are very few players for whom I would trade CK. Those teams have no reason to trade for him. 99 is right in that it would take a team absorbing a bad contract and figuring out how to send us a young number 1/2, a young stud bat, and probably more.
Better numbers than every pitcher (in his number of innings et al.) in the last 50 plus years? I honestly think CK is about more than money (I have been proven wrong before). I think that 8/ 238 gets it done. That puts him at 33 at contract's end.
Kasten says that eventually our payroll won't be so high but that's looking impossible to accomplish for at least 5-6 years.
There's no denying his talent and importance to our organization. Unfortunately when you're forced to put a price on it there has to be a limit. The one thing I hate about MLB's system is guaranteed contracts. He could never throw a pitch in the entire contract and we;ll be paying him, he'll be on our payroll, count towards luxury tax, etc. And I said I don't get why he "NEEDS" so much money. Not if he is owed it relative to other contracts and pitchers. Jmo.
Fuck Africa. How long have they been getting a fucking shitload of charity and it's still the same shithole. Here's a crazy thought, help out Americans. I know, crazy crazy crazy idea.
That is exactly it. There has to be a limit and I'm not even comfortable about giving a pitcher 30M a year but if he wants over that then I'd trade him.
